What's In A Name

Two posts in one day...craziness right?  Well some of you caught my little "tease" (as Lili put it) in my last post about big doin's going on around here.

It seems that there will be the pitter patter of little paws around our house very soon...in just over 2 weeks to be exact!  The sweet little girl you see on the right in the photo above will soon be ours, and I'm SO excited...in case you haven't noticed!

Several of you have sent me emails asking how I worked my magic to get Mr. Tide to go from a resounding NO to a yes in just a few days.  Well the truth is he's a bigger sucker for dogs, or any animal, than I am.

It took me a very long time to convince him (8 years to be exact) that we should have two dogs.  So you see he's no pushover!  But the fact is that Miss Kylee our Border Collie will be turning 10 in just a few months and Mr. Quinn is only 2.

Last month, our dear sweet Miss Kylee was diagnosed with congestive heart issues, she's had a murmur since she was young and the thought of losing her had me in tears.  She is doing great now that we have her on 4 different medications, and we hope she will be with us for a very long time.  But we've talked about adding a third dog off and on for over a year, with me doing most of the talking...but still!  We like the idea of having Miss Kylee around to teach the pup some new tricks so to speak and for Quinn to have a companion a little closer in age for when the inevitable happens, which I hope is a long way off!!!

The other night after playing with my friend's sweet Rottie pups, I came home to find an email from Mr. Quinn's breeder Ann.  She had forwarded pictures to us of puppies sired by the same dog as Quinn...the ever handsome Finn McCool!  So that would mean that these pups would be half siblings to our very own Mr. Quinn!!

Fate?!  I think so.  I hadn't been looking at puppies, or even talking about puppies and then that very night when I had just played with puppies I open my in-box and shazam, there are 9 sweet puppy faces staring back at me saying...pick me, pick me!

It took a little fast talking, I won't lie.  I had to lay out a logical argument for my very logical husband.  I had to keep puppy pictures on my desktop 24/7 and say things like..."do you like this one's coloring or this ones's coloring?!"  And "isn't this one cute?!"  To which he would reply "are there any ugly puppies in the world?!"  But eventually he couldn't resist any more than I could.

It will be work...a puppy again, what am I thinking?!  But oh the rewards too!  If we were retired, traveled a lot, or our youngest dog was 10 this whole discussion would never have happened.  But because none of those things apply, and my husband and I work from home most days, it seems somewhat reasonable.  Hmm, I think I'm writing this down for later reference! ;-)

So....now for the hard part!  Not the housebreaking, the sleepless nights, having to manage 3 dogs on a walk, etc...It's time to pick out a name!!!  For my family this is always a challenge!  A daughter that loves the sweet names, a son that wants a wolf dog so he wants a strong sounding name, and me who just can't decide!  Mr. Tide waits for the dust to settle and then throws in his 2 cents.

I need your help!  Stare into that precious face above, remember she's an English gal from good strong stock, and help me pick a name...please I'm beggin' you!  Who knows which one we'll settle on, but I know that the more I have to choose from the easier my life will be!

I would love to hear what you think this sweet little girl's name should be!  I was already vetoed on my pick of Arwen...shortened to Wennie!

  1. I got that teaser....probably because (and no one else in blogland knows) we just brought home another Cairn pup on Saturday! I'll send you some names - our little one is a boy, but I do have some girl names!

  2. Oh, you lucky thing! I've been wanting a friend for our Darcy for a while now, but my husband - not so much. You see, our boy is a such gem, and so easy to have around, he's worried things may not be so easy if we add another dog into the mix. Anyway, I'll work on him :) As for names, that's a hard one - how about Miss Clementine? Pretty, rather English-sounding? Or Shelby? Hmm, this is harder than I thought! Regardless, your new baby is absolutely beautiful, and I can't wait for lots of gorgeous pics to hit your blog over the coming months. K xx

  5. Oh, my gosh, she's adorable. I think she looks like an Olivia (Livvy) or a Sophie.
I took the names from a film clip I saw the other day from The Holiday (2006). Sophie and Olivia were Jude Law's sweet little daughters in that film. Such sweeties.

  6. Hi Kat, Your little sweet pup is adorable. Can you please persuade my husband that we need a puppy? Our son's 80 pound rottweiler mix is staying with us this week. He is absolutely the sweetest dog and so wonderful with the grand kids. Congrats on the new addition to your family.
    xoxo,
    Sherry

  7. Kat, she is adorable. It will be work, but so worth all those licks they give. Not sure about a name and then Matilda just popped in my head. You could call her Mattie.

  12. I love the name Wennie. Our rowdy did not have a name for two weeks. Sometimes you have to wait on their personality to reveal the perfect name. We had a second runner up name of Henry, but the personality just said Rowdy. Congratulations on being new puppy parents. You are going to have tons of fun in the weeks and months ahead!

  18. Beatrix or Bebe or Bea for short. Fergie is also adorable. There is nothing as cute as baby animals. Can't wait to hear all the stories. Oh there is also Scarlett or Lettie as a nickname.

  19. Congratulations and the timing is perfect. She is adorable and I think her name should be Jane...or is there a famous photographer who inspires you? Anyway, she is lucky to have two loving parents and 2 very respectable "siblings" to show her the ropes.

  20. Well I'm English too but I don't think she looks like a 'Denise' ;-) How about Charlotte, or Charlie for short, or Maggie, Princess, Bella, Lucy, Lady. Can't wait to hear what you pick, she's adorable :)

  21. Emma popped into my head, but I second Clementine. I've always wanted a female Bassett Hound; I would name her Clementine Josephine .. Clemmie Jo. Husband vetos both the breed and the name choice! I guess my Souhern heritage shows in the name. My sister has two female Bassetts with lovely names - Gracie Pearl and Bobbie T. We say they look like her ... short legs and freckles! What ever name you choose I'm sure it will fit her perfectly. Congratulations on the new addition!

  22. Oh she is adorable. Our old dog was a border collie - we had him for 14 and a half years - I had no trouble naming him as I was in love with Matt Dillon at the time (I was 19!) plus we live in Wales so Dillon (not Dylan) it was. Dillon was super intelligen. We now have Woody the golden retriever who is adorable but compared to Dillon is the stupidest dog ever put on this earth. Such a lovely dog though and fantastic with children - we have been so lucky with both of them.
My husband also grew up with border collies and had one called Meg (Megan is a welsh name and the dog came from Wales) and another called Molly which really suited her. If you really want to go British you could call her Elizabeth (after the Queen) and shorten it to Betty!
    Good luck choosing.

  23. So cute!!! I've been wanting a dog also as my "baby" is 14 1/2. He's a long-haired dachshund named Boogie. I cannot introduce a puppy to the house with him being the age he is though. I was scanning some sites recently and came across a dachshund that needed to find a home and her birthday was the same day as Boogie's.....fate? I was really tempted but the timing was not ideal with other things going on. Your situation with the younger dog already makes so much sense. Wish I could help suggest a name but I am at a loss. I like Maggie as someone suggested. She is adorable! Good luck and keep your beautiful photos coming!

  24. LUCKKY YOU!!!!... and she totally looks like an Emma to me.

  25. Oh she's beautiful! How about Fiona! Or Jane! Or Emma!

  26. Well here's a co-incidence for you. My daughter Kendall has the most delightful boyfriend who hails from County Galway. Alan is a great story teller (so typical of the Irish) and the other night over dinner he shared with us (in his beautiful Irish lilt) the story of the famous Irish Giant "Finn McCool". According to Irish folklore, Finn McCool and his wife managed to trick the famous Scottish Giant Benandonner (in his fight for supremacy) by dressing Finn McCool as a baby and putting him into a cradle. When the Scottish giant saw the size of the "baby" he was so shocked that he turned on his heels and raced over the sea back to Scotland! Now that Mrs McCool was obviously ONE very clever girl. Her name was "Oonagh". When I look at your gorgeous little girl - I can see that same smartness and intelligence in her eyes. "Oonagh" - daughter of "Finn McCool" - yes, I think that has a lovely ring about it! ;)Sharyne

  27. Awww...she is so cute! Congrats! I want one too! I am drawing a blank on names too, because the only thing I can think of when I look at these photos is, Oh, she is such a "sweetie".

  30. Kat, what a sweet cute puppy!!! I want one! I love the name Emma-we had a Golden Retriever named Emma. Good luck with her!! Can't wait to see and read about her when you get her! HUGS!!

  31. I've heard you're supposed to give dogs names that end in "y" or "ie" because it is easier for them to recognize as "their" name. We named our Aussie Guinness and occasionally lapsed in to Guinny when playing or cuddling. He was so intelligent that he never needed the "y" or "ie" ending to recognize his name, even though he was two or so when we got him and ours was a new name for him. Given that your little girl is of a similar remarkably intelligent breed, you need not limit yourself to the "y" or "ie"-ending names, BUT Lily Fiona McCool is what she looks like to me. You should get her a tartan for the Christmas Walk in Old Town---how precious would that be!

  32. What about Boudica, the old English warrior queen? Might pacify the wolf, and would shorten beautifully!

  33. Wennie is a magical and perfect name. That gets my vote, but then I love Glenwyn, Gwenyth, etc.

    All joys to you,

  34. We just got our puppy, Ajay, about a month ago. It took us so long to agree on a name. Finally one day when I was looking for lab pups, I came across one named Ajay and borrowed the name. When I told Matt, he loved it! it's funny to think that that could be the hardest part of the whole thing!

  35. I am such a puppy person. I would have a houseful if they would just stay little! Our beagle is 14 and we have talked about getting a second one, but she is so spoiled that I just can't do it to her. I want her last years to be all about her at this point...we've never had a dog live this long, so there should be some reward for that!

Such a cute pup...I would be so excited!

  36. Kat, I'm soooo excited
    for you! I really want
    a companion for Gracie,
but we love to take her
    with us when we travel
    and it is already so
    expensive just for one...
    It wouldn't be feasible
    {at least on Delta ~ $350
round trip!} if we had two.
Okay, I think a nice, strong
    ENGLISH name is in order.
My parent's new pup is called
    Kate, but I think yours
should be JANE : )!!! Or
Janie : ) Or Emma or Emily.
    Jemima is cute, too!
Can't wait to see all those
    darling pictures!
    xx Suzanne
