A Man's Prerogative

They say that it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind...but sometimes it's a man's prerogative too!

Saturday we went to look at our new puppy, the one I showed you in my last post.  The one you all gave such great name suggestions for...who would likely have been named Lily Clementine, or Bella Rose, or Emma....thank you!  Those were all top contenders, but none of us could agree!

When I asked the breeder to reserve Lily Clementine Emma Bella Rose, it was because she told us she was a very middle of the road puppy, just what we were looking for.  But she also sent us pictures of a little black and white puppy who she described as very sweet.

Mr. Tide and I went out to dinner on Friday night with my sister and brother in law and on the way home he said, "why are we driving 3 hours to look at the puppies when we've already picked one out?"  I explained that we needed to give the breeder a deposit, that I wanted to see the mom (since I already knew a lot about the dad of the pups), and that I just wanted to make sure that the little tri colored girl was the one for us.  He agreed, so on Saturday morning we got ourselves up, and off we went to see the puppies!

After 2 hours of playing, observing, and holding the puppies (thank you Dianna for indulging us for so long!) we ended up picking the "sweet" puppy she had suggested to us from the beginning.  Before we met her, we were worried that with Mr. Quinn's dominant temperament a sweet dog might not be able to stand up to him the way a middle of the road puppy would.

But there was just something about her, and Mr. Tide was smitten and said that he really thought this was the puppy for us.  He picked up lots of puppies, but this sweet little black and white girl was the only one to lavish him with kisses.  And although she's sweet, she has a little moxie too, and she'll have no trouble keeping Mr. Quinn in line when necessary, I am certain of it.

In a perfect world we would have been able to take both the little tri girl and this one, but I was pushing my luck getting one dog...so I knew better than to go there...oh but I was tempted.  I know the other puppy will find a wonderful home, she is full of energy and will need a job, like all herding breeds do.

But for us, this was the right decision.  The pups live on a wonderful horse farm and have two great boys who love them to pieces and have named them after the weather.   The tri colored puppy we almost got was named Tornado!  There was one named Cloud, Rainy, Tsunami, etc.  But our little girl was named Misty.

As we drove off, Mr. Tide said, "I like the name Misty, and I'm fine with keeping that name."  I said that I was thinking the same thing.  Then I called my daughter and told her the whole story, she said she liked the name Misty too.  Then we phoned our son who said he also thought Misty was a good name.

So you see, we were all in agreement.  And sometimes it's a man's prerogative to change his mind and get a little Misty! ;-)

I hope you all have a very Happy Halloween!  We got our treat on Saturday...now I just have to wait 2 more weeks to bring her home!

  1. Oh my goodness, I am in LOVE with your sweet Misty! She is just the perfect puppy - I look forward to seeing LOTS more of her on your blog!

Wow - there was a Tsunami in the bunch? I thought we had the market on Tsunami! Better not tell, my Tsunami might get his feelings bruised - he is such a sensitive cat.

Have a wonderful weekend with your dear puppy!

  2. Kat, She is adorable! I know you can't wait to bring her home. After your post yesterday I told Hubby again that I wanted a puppy. This time he said "maybe when we get the yard fenced". That is as close as I have ever got from him on the puppy issue. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
    xoxo,
    Sherry

  8. Misty is one lucky pup, who could turn away from that beautiful face. We are such dog lovers in our family we have to be careful looking at pups or we'd be running a kennel. Sounds like your family is much the same Kat. Congratulations on your new addition and I hope the next two weeks fly by for you so you can bring that little beauty home..

  10. Little Misty looks like a love!!! It's important to listen to that little voice in our gut, especially when it comes to sweet puppy faces. The little voice told you to open your heart and accept this puppy, and I can tell that you are completely smitten.

You only have two weeks to puppy proof your house ... get going! (Puppy proofing is a tiny bit simpler than kitten proofing, mainly because puppies cannot jump onto the kitchen counters.)

I'm glad you decided to keep Misty as her name, because I was going to have to remind you that MY dog is Emma ... imagine how confused we would get when we are talking about the dogs? MY Emma vs. YOUR Emma ... or would it be BIG Emma and LITTLE Emma? I'm already confused ... I think it's exhaustion.

  12. I just found your blog for the first time. I love any and all stories about dogs as I have four myself. You made the right choice. In my experience...their personalities are showing when they are little bitty. My own Violet was independent at 6 weeks and she still is. My little Newman snuggled right up on to my shoulder and that is still his preferred spot. My dear sweet Harvey I took because the breeder said I had to....because he was so sweet she thought I just had to have him. All of them had their little personalities the first time I met them. Now....my Sally....I adopted at about age year and a half. She is a little scrapper. I love her...but she is probably not a puppy I would have picked. She is high energy and likes to play rough. But she needed me so she got added to the mix.

I love border collies. I had one as a child and would love to have one again some day.

    Congratulations!

  15. When a puppy kisses you, it doesn't matter what their name is. But, Misty is a lovely name for SUCH a sweet faced little girl. :-))

  16. Misty looks so sweet and I guess you all got a Halloween treat. I'll enjoy watching her grow. My son and his wife went to pick up one pup and they came home with two. They were brothers and now Ben & Jake are very pampered pets...lol...

  18. Ow she is so adorable as well!! It is always so hard to choose! I love the name Misty and she will, I bet, give Mr. Quinn a good run for his money! That last picture of her I can see that moxie in her eyes!! So glad that you had fun puppy time and you picked out your beautiful little girl!! They will all find wonderful homes and Misty is by far the luckiest to have you! :)

  20. Sometimes you just know it when you see it and it sounds like Mr. Tide instantly knew! That is such a happy story and very cool that she was already given such a perfect name. And I see you've already captured the most adorable poses of her too! ~Lili

  22. She is so cute and I have to agree Misty is a great name. I'm thinking you are going to be a tad busy in the next little while. Nice working the husband's resolve down, by the way.

  23. OMG Kat these puppies are all so adorable. No wonder you had such a time deciding. And personality would have to be the way to go because they're all so sweet to look at. Oh my what I wouldn't give to nustle one of those beatuies under my chin. OMG they're gorgeous. They look like my lady did when she was little. She was a springer spaniel/collie mix. Pound dog. And you're right...our lifestyle keeps us from getting another right now. But if I could twist the hubbys arm I sure would. You're so lucky to be of like mind with your mate! I'm jealous!

  24. Oh my goodness Kat, I can smell the puppy breath from here. There is nothing better. I can't wait until you bring Misty home.

  25. I'm so behind on news - I can't believe you're getting a puppy!!!! She is adorable, and yes, the name Misty is perfect. It fits very well with Kylee and Quinn. Much as I love puppies, I have to remind myself of when our dog was a puppy and why I will likely never have another one. Being cute was the only thing that kept her alive many times - haha! I think it will probably only be adult dogs for me in the future, but it's nice to live vicariously through others, seeing all the cute photos and hearing the stories without having to raise a puppy myself :) I can't wait until you bring her home and she settles into the pack!
