Sworn Enemies

Our wonderful neighbor "J" has 3 beautiful cats.  They are the lights of her life, aside from her family of course, but for our dear dog Mr. Quinn, they represent evil in it's purist form.

I'm not quite sure what it is about these friendly felines that gets his ire up so badly since he's lived side by side with them since he was just a wee pup, but whatever it is, his feelings of disdain for them runs deep.  He is somewhat irritated by all of them, but there is one cat neighbor in particular that he has it out for!

Her name is Katie Kitty, and even the mere mention of her name will send him flying to a window or door to see if she is invading our territory by walking through our yard.  Now you have to understand that we live next to 200 acres of undeveloped land, about 30 of which is open fields, so Katie Kitty finds this wide open hunting space completely irresistible.  Mr. Quinn on the other hand finds her need to cut across our yard to get to the fields as a personal affront to his doggie manhood and so he goes completely ballistic every time she does this, and I do mean every time!

I'm not even sure how he does it, he can be lying at my feet in a dead sleep and somehow he senses her little paws treading across our lawn and races to the window as though 6 heavily armed intruders are trying to break down the doors!  Also keep in mind that sweet Katie Kitty knows just which buttons to push and will sashay past the windows and flaunt her fluffy tail as if to say, catch me if you can you dumb dog you!

Aside from being rather loud and startling when Mr. Quinn goes in to high alert mode, he pretty much just goes straight to red alert level, which doesn't really help me stay calm and zen like I'm supposed to.  Not to mention the fact that this is great fun if you are in the midst of an important work phone call!  And it is wreaking havoc with our new wood floors and nicely painted window sills! Today he added a few more scratches to the sill in our bedroom and found himself in the dog house as far as his momma was concerned!

Last week, Katie made an error in judgment and lingered a little too long in the yard.  So of course she ended up in a tree for awhile, once the dogs spotted her, and didn't come down until all was quiet on the western front!

So it's man against beast, or at least woman against dog at this point.  So listen up, we like Katie Kitty and her mole killing skills so Mr. Quinn, as cute and lovable as you are, I'm afraid you and Miss Katie Kitty need to sign a treaty, come to an understanding, and just plain call a truce!

  1. Oh dear, I can just hear Miss Katie Kitty "nana, nana, boo boo" - in cat language of course. Poor Mr. Quinn, he'd better learn to love his fluffy neighbor. Or at least learn how to hunt moles. Cute post, but sorry about your window sills! Kathy

  2. Oh Mercy! I can truly understand..I have 2 cats that also love the great outdoors. And neighbors with dogs behind us that ocassionally get a kick out of chasing our girls up trees on our own property. They are all wonderful furry friends but sometimes really act like squabbling children. I couldn't help but notice how similar Katie Kitty and Mr.Quinn are in their colorings. They are both very cute!

  3. Hah! Maybe that's why he doesn't like her, maybe he thinks that because her coloring is so similar that she's trying to copy his "look"! ;-) We've often said that if Mr. Quinn were human, he would be a GQ model!

  4. You have a whole lot more patience than I do if you can put up with Mr. Quinn scratching up the woodwork in your house. Animals have such personalities, don't they. They are quite hilarious and you would find this to be hilarious if it wasn't all out war in Mr. Quinn's mind, I suppose. Interesting, good luck with this, hugs, Cindy S

  5. Poor Quinn. If there's one thing that cats are good at, it's pushing dog buttons. If it helps, those aren't scratches on your floors ... they're character marks. (says the lady whose relatively-newly-refinished pine floors have lots of 'character').

  6. Oh my, it sounds like exciting times at your place! Cats are funny creatures aren't they. Our cat always teases our dog and gets him into trouble! xx

  7. That's so funny, our dog is deadly afraid of cats. When our Darcy was a baby, my sister's cat decided to make sure he knew just who was boss from the outset, so now he gives cats a very wide berth! He's now a 37kg labrador, but still acts like a scared little puppy whenever he sees a big bad kitty. Quite hilarious really.

  8. I love it!! We have 2 dogs and a cat but they all get along pretty well!! And my kitty doesn't have any claws so she wouldn't be able to climb anything:)

  9. Kat, that is too funny. I can just picture that cat strolling by and Mr. Quinn having a barking frenzy. I know what you mean about being sound asleep and then up and barking like crazy all of a sudden. Bailey makes me come out of my skin sometimes.

  10. That is a cute story:) He looks so sad,he really wants the kitties, you can tell. I'm a dog person & my Dobie does the same to the cats that walk in our yard just teasing away.

  11. They're so cute and stunning pets. Commonly dogs will tease the cats. It seems the dog will overwhelm the cats.

By the way, thanks for stopping by my blog.

  12. That's funny. Dogs and cats are so different. What would Quinn do if he actually caught a cat? He probably just enjoys the chase and doesn't know what he would do.

  14. Hi Kat! Too funny, I read the title, "sworn enemies" and the only part of the picture showing on my screen was the very top of the dogs head, so I thought it was a skunk! Glad you weren't dealing with one of those! :)

  15. Hello Kat,

Cute post! Mr. Quinn is quite handsome and Katie Kitty is quite elegant. I love watching the dynamics between the cats and dogs at my house. Okay, to be honest, I sometimes find it extremely amusing especially recently as I mentioned in my post about the new kid on the block. I agree, they are not scratches, they are marks of character.

  16. Oh this was hilarious Kat!! So well written that I can envision the scene so well. You can't help but laugh at that kitty for taunting, and your Mr. Quinn for responding. The scratches however, ouch! ~Lili
