Room With a View

You may remember me telling you that our daughter has been home for the last two weeks due to some unexpected surgery.  You also may recall my tale about having to find her a new bed since the one that was in her room went with her when she got her own apartment last fall.

Since she has been away at college, and now living on her own, the entire time that we've owned this house, "her" room has served a multitude of purposes over the last three years.  It's been her bedroom for several summers, a guest room on occasion, but mostly it's just been the catch all room!  Meaning that anything and everything can end up in there, including a few furniture painting projects that I've done in the last few months.

During our renovation, it was filled to the brim with everything from dishes to dressers!  I remember one day when our wonderful contractor Richard asked if I would have it cleared out for him to do the window trim by the next day.  Now this was at about 4:00 p.m. on the day before and I knew what lurked behind that door, but he didn't have a clue how much crap had been shoved in there over that week since he had installed the new window.  So I flung the door wide open and said "Umm there is NO WAY I can clean this out for you by tomorrow!"  Being the patient man that he was, he simply grinned and said "Ok, so when will it be ready?!"

 Before

I even took a picture of what it looked like the day Richard asked if I could have it cleared out by the next morning to show my forum friends what "real" renovating looked like!  It looks like this, a mess!  Can you even make out the bed piled high with stuff?!  That's the one that went with our daughter to her new place.

During

Fast forward a year, and this is how the room looked this morning after our daughter left.  Because her surgery was so unexpected I didn't really have time to run out 2 weeks ago to buy a new bedspread and accessories.  We made due with queen size bedding that we already owned, but today I was on a mission to get the room looking like a real room again after almost a year of it being a mess!

We are so lucky to have this house which is in such a beautiful natural setting.  Every room has a view of the water, whether it's the creek behind our house, or the river across the street.  Our daughter's room is small and has only one window, but the natural light and views are amazing!

You can't really tell it from these photographs, but the river is actually 5 miles wide at this point from shoreline to shoreline.  When the weather is warmer we can throw open the windows and listen to the sound of the waves, it's so soothing!

After

By the time I got home tonight from running around all day looking for the bedding and a few accessories it was already dark, but I couldn't wait to pull it altogether and set the room up.  I love the bedding I found at Marshall's for $24.99, it looks great with the cute bed I found at The Vintage Source!  And see the throw at the end of the bed?  It's the bedspread I used last week as a tablecloth for my Tablescape Thursday post!  It was crocheted by my Grandmother many years ago!

Here is a  close up of the bedding which is by Tommy Hilfiger.  I love how colorful it is!

The rug and throw pillows all came from Target.  The rug was on sale for $17.99 and the pillows were $9.99 a piece.  I love how the rug ties in all of the colors of the bedding and compliments the soft pink wall color!

I helped make this little bedside table and chose a soft green paint color called Pearwood by Old Village Paint Colours.  The sweet August Moon figurine was a graduation gift to our daughter from my dear friend "S" and it says "Reach for the Highest Star".

I found this fun bright green enamel tub at Tuesday Morning.  It's perfect for holding a super soft throw and some magazine so that guests can snuggle up and catch up on some reading.

I even changed out some of the artwork in the room.  This needs to be framed and matted properly, but I love this painting!  It's by a famous artist...our daughter at the age of 7!!!

And while I was out shopping today I stopped by The Apple Basket, a local store filled with all sorts of fun things.  I fell in love with this vintage'y' child's sand bucket!

  1. Reach for the Highest Star! I have the same little figurine on the bookcase on our third floor landing - otherwise known as 'The Kids' Floor.' So sweet.

LOVE the room makeover! It always so exciting when putting a room together, isn't it?

Also, your 'before-before' pic reminded my of my own office-studio. It's located on the second floor and is the entire width of the house and half as deep. We moved here from a rambling ranch to a tall American Craftsman - definitely a lifestyle change! EVERYTHING that had no pre-defined home ended up in this room until it was floor to ceiling and wall to wall. There was one path to get through to the 3rd floor stairs and a small patch of floor bare where my computer and I would sit so I could work.

It's nothing like that now! And I may have taken a picture of it. . . if only I could have found my camera. hehehe.

  2. Oh Kat, it turned out so pretty! I love the colors you chose and your daughter's painting is gorgeous. Seriously, she was only 7 when she painted that? That's good news to hear she has recovered from her surgery too. You always have the best posts, I do love seeing before and afters. You must feel very happy to have yet another beautiful room to enjoy. How lucky you are to have a view from every room, it doesn't get much better than that. That child's sand bucket is darling. ~Lili

  9. Kat - this room looks lovely. I really love the bed - this is the kind of bed I would love for Lily instead of her scrolly metal one! I am speechless at the view from your home. This is the kind of place where I dream of living. I hope your daughter feels back to normal soon!

  17. The room looks all bright and cheery now. I just love finding deals at Target, Home Goods, and TJ MAxx. To have a view like you do is my dream. The next house I move to has to be near water of some sort - the larger the better, but I would be happy with a creek. I enjoyed your post.

I've seen artwork by young kids a lot over the years, and that isn't anywhere close to their style...it's wonderful! Thanks for sharing the transformation. You did a marvelous job!

  28. I try not to have catch all rooms in my house because that just creates a mess. That mess leads to more stress in my life.
