In Shreds

I'm making progress on my Christmas decorating for this year.  As you may remember, I was torn between using all of my traditional decor, or going with a more simplistic and natural approach.  I finally decided to go with a more restrained look this year, and I'm embracing a coastal cottage look that I'm liking a lot.  I've also decided that I will try and only use what I have on hand or what I can find in nature.  My goal is to spend little or no money aside from buying some fresh greens that I can't find on my own.

There are still many more things to do...weird since simple should mean I'm done already right?!  What I have found is that simple isn't always easy.  I find it takes a lot more thought to use less and edit out the unnecessary yet still have it convey a festive look.  And I've always thought that I was a less is more sort of person, turns out I'm a more is more kind of person, but I'm liking moving over to the "light" side!

As much as I'm loving my pared down look for the holidays, I'm not loving some other things going on around here these days!  Like my email which is still giving me fits!  The fact that our son's tire blew out while he was driving home...thankfully he was fine!  The money I set aside to finish our backsplash is now going to 4 shiny new tires, which aren't cheap.  I dearly want my backsplash done, but I want our son to be safe WAY more!

And speaking of shredding, Misty Belle, yes that cute little pup, who is over a year old now, has taken to chewing on things!  The other evening while watching Glee in our living room I caught her nibbling on the skirt of the couch.  What the heck?!  She has never done that before!

I guess sometimes, even when you are finding your groove in one part of your life, another part can be completely in shreds.  Let's hope she gets through this wacky phase quickly.  I know I've said I want a new sofa for my living room, but she didn't have to take it so literally, unless of course she has a puppy bank account with a furniture fund in it that I'm unaware of!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Love your natural look for the holidays! Sounds like Miss Misty Belle may need some bitter apple spray to stop the chewing! Worked wonders on our pup!

  3. Don't buy a sofa until she is 5 years old. LOL and ya... those tires are NOT cheap. Takes a small fortune to add 4 new ones to my SUV.. ouch!

  4. Looking forward to more of your lovely photos. The boxwood wreaths are so pretty and exactly what I was searching for to use on my kitchen hutch with no luck. Too bad about the chewing, dogs sure can be a challenge at times.

  5. Started breaking out the Christmas decorations this afternoon. I can't do the pared down look, tho. Big, bright, and colorful are the themes around here. Wait till you see the front of our house. :)

  6. I like natural too and the wreath is gorgeous. I agree with you Kat, 4 shiny new tyres for your son's car are much the priority.

  7. Was Misty Belle nibbling on the sofa and watching Glee, or just nibbling? When we bought a new sofa to replace our shredded by cats old sofa, we covered the back of the sofa with an attractive throw, since that is where our cats tend to claw. Does Misty Belle have a saving account, LOL.

  8. Naughty little Misty....leave that sofa alone.

Shame about the tires, I had spending on things like that. I just got back from the garage getting the snow tires put on daughters car....it never ends.

  10. Oh it's all happening at your place Kat! Sorry about the tyres :(.... you will get your backsplash... or as we call it 'splashback'!... down here. Love your Christmas decor and I love how your header changes all the time. Love it! A-M xx

  11. Kat, I have trouble doing less in decor as well. I am better with more too. I did donate several boxes of ornies and just stopped with the tree after a while and said this is enough. I bought tires for my car and my kiddo wrecked the front end of it too. It never ends. Like your back splash we are never getting a new kitchen and right now at the old house the lights are out in the bathroom. Joe says I can shower with candles...great. Anyhoo have a lovely weekend. ♥O

  12. She may be jealous that you are watching TV and not her. Hopefully is is a phase. I am striving to not lose my patience or energy and get ALL of my ornaments on the tree! I peter out usually and say, "That's enough" and there are then some poor neglected but beautiful ornaments stashed away! So, it's going to be a long process!

I like the rustic look...the pared down look, I am excited to see how you do!

  13. I wish I could get Bailey to make my refrigerator quit working so I can get a new one. Give Misty Belle a Nyla bone to chew on instead of your couch.

  14. I look at decorating for Christmas as a gift to myself I don't do it quickly at all, I love to take my time and enjoy it. Afterall it is not a race to finish first. it sounds as if you are enjoying your process to me. Good luck with your puppy, I hope he doesn't get sofa hungry again.
    Merry Christmas,

  15. I, too, am going with a more restrained look for Chrismtas this year. I agree with you that less is not always easier. You have to be more creative with what you have and use more texture I think. I like the new look though. Can't wait to see yours when it's all done. Good luck with your new puppy. We went through a chewing phase with ours when he was little, but we made sure to give him plenty of chew toys and teach him what the word "no" meant so he would learn what was ok and not ok to chew on. He'll come around eventually. I would try to keep him from getting bored too. Dogs chew when they need to release pent up energy.

  16. Boy, do I "get" and relate to this post!
Just when you think you've got it all under control, WHAMMO, life slaps you upside the head with something else.

You're a good mama for getting the tires, and perhaps the pup will find something more palatable to chew on. Gosh, I hope so! My cat ruins everything in sight, so I can relate!

Have a blessed week, my friend!

  17. So glad Bugs is okay! And the thought of Misty Belle helping you out by trying to chew up your sofa is just so cute. Oops. I really love that little starfish wreath, now I want one too! xo ~Lili

  18. I love your take on simple - the gorgeous green wreath with a starfish in it and the turquoise mason jar with an evergreen branch in the window. It does take more deliberate energy to decorate simply with what you have or can find, but I love the end results so much more.

  19. Our dog was so good until a few months ago and then he started chewing things. He's only about a year and a half, so I'm still hoping we can break him of it, but so far, no luck. I'm pretty sure that he does it because he's bored while we're away during the day, but when I buy him toys they don't last very long! I'd love to hear if you discover how to make them stop!

  20. My advice for the dog is exercise, exercise, exercise and crate training. Our (now 14 year old) yellow Lab was a destroyer until we crate trained her. She still stays in her crate when we are not home, even though I know she wouldn't harm a thing. She loves her crate, goes in there when she's not feeling well, it's her puppy condo and I know she's safe.
