In The Blink of an Eye

I hope that each of you had a wonderful weekend.  Ours was filled with good food and lots of yard work!

Last week Mr. Tide and I took off for the day and went to a place where we had our first "real" date so many years ago.

It's a sailing town, one of the best in the world, and somewhere that I've spent a great deal of time in, even before Mr. Tide and I met while racing sailboats that fateful evening.

Even though we are so very blessed to live on the water, being near sailboats or boats of any sort makes me feel at home.  Maybe it's because I have been on the water since I was born really, heck, my baby book shows that my first boat ride was long before I could even walk.

Being out on the water is where I find comfort, it has always been the place I turn to when I'm feeling low or over the moon happy...it's a part of who I am, and happily it has become a part of Mr. Tide and our children as well.

And being near beautiful boats, seeing ropes neatly coiled, sails furled, and hearing the sound of waves lapping on their hulls, made me realize that while I've been here on my computer, taking care of ailing parents, or busy doing work for the past 10 or so years, I have missed that salt air and the medicinal value it has for someone like me.

When our son was on a sailing team a few years ago, I felt the tug at my heartstrings once again, but I let it go as we had house remodeling and things like that requiring our immediate attention, but I think it's time now.

Time I got back to doing the things I love to do.  Time I did less sitting and more moving.  Time I found those little pieces that are buried deep inside me, but still clamoring to be heard from again.

The way life is clicking by so quickly, I don't want to wake up and find that twenty years have flown by the way the last twenty have, and that suddenly I can't do the things I want to do any longer.  That's how life works sometimes, you blink and when you finally open your eyes you realize so much time has passed.

So for now, if you are looking for me, you might just try gazing out to sea, or on a tennis court somewhere, or maybe even a place I haven't discovered yet.

  2. I am with you. I didn't grow up on the water - I grew up in the mountains but I always LONGED for the water..was fascinated by it. In the mid 90's we had a boat docked that we lived aboard during the summer. We would go to work from dockage and go back to the same. I absolutely loved it and felt the most peaceful I ever have. We sold the boat and it has been gone for 5 years. Our son just told us that the boat is up for sale again for about 1/2 of what we sold it for...it is sooooo tempting. Good luck- I hope your boating dreams all come true! xo Diana

  3. I've only sailed twice. Once on Lake Ontario with someone who had no clue and scared me to death, the second time we motored for an hour up the Fraser river in BC to the open sea and then we lost the wind. I would love to try a lesson and this has nudged me to look into that.

Hope you had a good Easter Kat.

  5. It is time for that "Cool Change" :) Your photos are gorgeous and I am so glad that you had a chance to escape to a place that conjured up those feelings again. Besides when I am able to come visit you I would love to go sailing. ;) Enjoy what you love my friend.

  6. What beautiful photos. My brother sails for a living and even though we've grown up close to the sea I never had any desire to get on a boat until we went to visit him in Spain for the first time. Being by the harbour with all the yachts was so thrilling. Amongst all the million dollar yachts my brother showed us his favourite and the one he would buy in a heartbeat - a really old, small wooden one with a tonne of character. I completely understood - it was gorgeous.
Go for it - get back into sailing. It's scary how the years are flying by xx

  7. Life is only a blink, just like Kenny says. Where does our precious time go to?

  8. I grew up in towns close to the beach and miss it so much. Love that salt air. Don't like my hair there much, but just part of it. Great photos.

  9. What beautiful photos. I agree with you, it is time. Hope you are able to enjoy it again soon. Some day there is a hope and dream for us to live by water also. Such a calm life. (Or at least it feels better amidst a life not so calm)

  10. Kat, what gorgeous photos!! I thought of you this weekend when I was taking photos of some swans and a few lakes that my Dad took us to. It was a 6 mile hike but it was well worth it! I especially loved chatting with him as we walked. My sister, Sandy went too and I enjoyed chatting with her too! Life is good!

  11. Hello my fellow sailor. Your photos are wonderful! I hope you and Mr. Tide had an enjoyable and relaxing time away doing the things that put you at ease.

This post spoke to me, as sailing is aqua therapy for my soul. Unlike anything else, being on or near the water has always provided me with a sense of serenity.

I think longing to be back out there is only natural and when you really think about it, what is not to love when you combine the water, wind, salt air and sun?!

    Fair winds my friend!

    XO,
    Laura

  12. I so get it.
I started kayaking three years ago, and I LOVE it!
There is just something about cutting through the water first thing in the morning...before anyone else is out there.
I'm glad you are going to get back to your hearts desires, Kat.
Life goes by so quickly....I feel like I have to close my eyes, and hold in each breath, then release them slowly to savor the moments.
Truly awesome photos with your post.

  13. I'm not a water gal at all, but I just LOVE these images! I love the grittiness of sailing vessels, and the romance of the sea.

    Lovely as always!

  14. Beautiful photos! I SO understand this...the minute I get on the boat, I just feel happy...I am a water girl. And not only that, my spirit relaxes the minute I leave the city...a country girl, too. Love your wonderful photos, Kat, and your header is so pretty, too!

  15. Hi there, I just found your blog -- nice to "meet" you! We have a sailboat.. Stargazer.. she's moored at Portland Yacht Club here in Oregon on the Columbia River. I had a mid-life crisis and lived aboard her alone for 4 months in the San Juan Islands and singlehanded her there. I urge you to go for it as now, 15 years later we may have to sell her due to health and age issues. It just kills me... I invite you to visit my blog.. I have some photos of her down a few posts. I'm bookmarking you!
    ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  16. Lovely post ! Sailing is such an exhilarating sport or it can be so relaxing and calming. Beautiful photos of the boat. I saw this quote just the other day--you might like it. "The cure for everything is saltwater--sweat, tears,or the sea." Have a great weekend. Mickie :)

  17. One of my favorite
    songs, as it says it
    so very well....as you
    have here, as well. I
    am feeling the same
    shift inside of me, so
    I am cheering you on
    and nodding from the
    sidelines. It's time to
    get back in the game!

    Happy Weekend,
    xx Suzanne

  18. Kat,
It was odd not blogging much these past 2 months. At first it made somewhat anxious and even feeling a bit guilty, but then not being plugged in gave way to a calm I have not felt in a long time even though i was so busy.

As for the sun and salt air, born in Florida so it's in my DNA like you and when I'm away from it too long it's almost painful.

Your pictures just keep getting better and better!

  20. What a wonderful post. I could feel your bond with the sea, and could sense the reunion you had with that part of your life.

My husband and I are empty nesters...and have had the opportunity to travel quite a bit as JUST THETWO OF US AGAIN. It is wonderful...and there is a sense of completion and awareness that I Need To Pay Attention to These Moments...for they are fleeting.

We stand on the mountaintops of life just long enough to perceive the next mountain we need to climb.

Thank you for this post..very thought provoking.

    In Him,
    Grace

  23. Oh Kat....I hear you I HEAR you....My clock is ticking louder & louder each & EVERY day....Not for babies though....For 'doing things'....I find myself in a panic thinking about how fast the time is flying by & what I need to do before my 'doing time' is behind me....**sigh**....

One of the things I would like to achieve is to become a better photographer....The only way I see that happening though is if I come visit with you for a day because your photos are TO DIE FOR....Now THAT'S art my Friend....!!!!!

I hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend Love....!!

    Cheers from Oz,
    Tamarah :o)

  26. Kat- the older I get the more I realize that time is passing all too quickly! I try to treasure everyday and truly get upset if I feel that I've had a somewhat wasted day.

Here is what I know-- if you want to do it- then you need to find the time to make it happen. Realizing that is the most important first step.

Your sailboat images are wonderful! I genuinely hope you can bring this back into your life--- at our age- it needs to be all about us- lol!

    Xo
