A Little Bit of Everything

Sometimes when I go to play with an image I have a clear cut vision of the end product.  I would say that about 90% of the time this is true and I can see the finished product before I even begin, but there is still that other 10% of the time when I just go in blind and hope for the best.

When I photographed some Ranunculus I picked up last weekend, I wasn't quite sure where I wanted to go picture wise, but I did know that I wanted a soft aqua paired with the pale pink of the flowers.  Usually I like to keep things simple, but for whatever reason, tonight I threw in a little bit of everything, including using some script brushes I bought from FK Textures.  At first I wasn't sure I liked it, but after a bit I decided that sometimes throwing in everything but the kitchen sink makes for a more interesting image.

I've heard through the grapevine that people are stealing other people's images and claiming them as their own...such a shame.  So from now on I will be doing more elaborate watermarks and only posting very low res images.  It makes me sad to think that I have to do this, but with things like Pinterest it appears that those of us who make our living from creating artwork,  need to watch our backs and protect our images.  I have no problem with someone pinning something I post, in fact I love it, but only when they give full credit on mine or anyone else's work.  I try my best to do this on anything I pin as well, though I'm sure we all have a few images that we can't nail down the original photographer or artist, but I would never pretend they were my own work.

Well that's enough blathering for one evening, I hope you all have a very Happy Tuesday!

  1. I love the photo, Kat! It's so nice that you know what you are aiming for ahead of time. As difficult as it is to learn how my camera operates, I am finding it almost as hard to find subjects to take pictures of. I definitely could use some inspiration!

It's a shame about the picture stealing. I don't have to worry about it though! ;-D

    Have a good week!

    XO,
    Jane

  3. Watermarks are a fact of life for images on the 'Net. In the comments on that post on my blog that I did about my husband's oil paintings, someone actually complained that the watermarks interfered with the image ... Hello, that's exactly what they are SUPPOSED to do.

Everything I post online is low res and watermarked ... not that my stuff is as good as yours ... but I still don't want it stolen.

  4. I have learned that many bloggers do participate in the "Borrowing" of images. Often is because of love and admiration for the artist.

Everyone should credit though and let he artist give approval..

  5. Your photo is beautiful. I think the colors and textures were a perfect choice. I put a little watermark on my photos too, since I get annoyed when people post my photos on tumblr. But like you, I love when people pin my photos...pin away people :)

  6. Your photos are always so beautiful, Kat.
I'm like Jane, I don't have to worry about anyone stealing any of my pictures...LOL
I'm sorry that this happens to you and others, however. It's a shame.
Your work is very inspiring, as are your heartfelt posts.

  8. I've been watermarking mine though mine are not as good as yours. Glad you brought up the pinning thing because ppl are not doing it right. It should lead you back to the original blog that created it. I've been chicken about posting on this subject as to not offend anyone. I like the way you brought it up.....great job.
oh love all the rose photos..can't pick my fave.

  9. It's because of you that I sought out and bought my first ranunculus last year. Before you posted them on your blog, I had never even seen them in real life. You always inspire me like that. xo ~Lili

  10. I had some photos of mine "borrowed" once. I put them up for friends and family of a bridal shower and one of the attendees used 3 of my photos on her blog. I agree that it would have been ok if I was given the credit for my photos but I wasn't. I'm not a professional photographer but am a perfectionist and only show my best work. Now I watermark everything so they can't be "borrowed".
