The Ocean

"My soul is full of longing
For the secret of the sea,
And the heart of the great ocean
Sends a thrilling pulse through me."
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach--waiting for a gift from the sea."
- Anne Morrow Lindbergh

"For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea."
- e.e. cummings

"The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever."
- Jacques Cousteau

"I could never stay long enough on the shore; the tang of the untainted, fresh, and free sea air was like a cool, quieting thought."
- Helen Keller

“The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach”
- Henry Beston

"At the beach, life is different. Time doesn't move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides, and follow the sun."
- Anonymous

"When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused."
- Rainer Maria Rilke

I hope that no matter where you live, these photos of the ocean and quotes about the sea will bring each of you a little bit of joy the way that each of your comments does for me every day!

  5. Love this post!! The photography and the quotes are wonderful. I just used the Anne Morrow Lindbergh quote when refering to my recent shelling expedition on Sanibel Island. I thought it was very appropriate...as shells really are gifts from the sea.

  19. I think that the
    sea must bring great
    peace and joy to almost
    everyone, because it
    seems that no matter
    how land-locked people
    are, whenever you speak
    of the sea, it brings
    a smile, a dreamy look
    or a faraway gleam in
    the eye. Loved how
    you captured the feeling,
    Kat!!!
    xx Suzanne
