6 Degrees of Separation, a Thank You Note, and A Giveaway

Bugs asked me to give everyone a big thank you from him for his wonderful birthday wishes yesterday!  He had a great day and even enjoyed a surprise party at a local restaurant with some of his closest friends!

I was tagged by the lovely Grace from Sense and Simplicity to post the 6th photo I used on my blog.

My 6th photo, shown above, is from this post about things on my wish list.  Hmm, it seems that I haven't received any of those lovely items I wrote about way back when.  But how nice that it's so close to Mother's Day and that I can revisit this post and give my family subtle hints!

And be sure to check back later today when I will be taking you on a tour of Brambles, the wonderful store I visited last weekend!

But until that post is up, head on over to see the great giveaway at Completely Coastal!  It's a beautiful piece of artwork, and you even get to choose which design you would like!    I love this gorgeous seahorse...which one will you pick?!

Birthday Wishes

Eighteen years ago today I gave birth to our second child, a son. I was not a very good pregnant woman, all of those stories about glowing women who never get sick, umm not me! Think Medivac rides in a helicopter, and seriously high blood pressure! But with my second pregnancy I did a bit better and made it a little bit closer to my due date! It was an exciting time, wondering if he would be born on my father's birthday which was yesterday, or on my mother's birthday which is today! We've always said that on the east coast he was born on Mom's birthday and on the west coast it made it in time for Dad's birthday!

Because I was considered high risk from the get go, I had lots of sonograms and other tests. I remember Mr. Tide was out of town for one of the early sonograms and the radiologist asked me if I wanted to know the sex of the baby. Now you have to understand that Mr. Tide and I didn't find out the sex with our daughter and we agreed that we'd wait to find out again with our second child. But here's a little secret about me...I'm not very good at waiting for surprises. I was the kid that tore apart the whole house before Christmas looking for my presents and that trait has never really gone away with age!

So since Mr. Tide wasn't there, what would it hurt to find out if we were having a boy or a girl right? No harm, no foul, I would find out but then swear myself to secrecy I thought! The doctor assured me that it was a boy, and even though I doubted him, since we've all heard stories about the whole nursery being decorated in blue and along comes a baby girl instead of a boy, I did sort of believe it was true. I came out from my test and promptly blabbed "it's a boy!" to my father and then phoned Mr. Tide and said I know but I'll keep it a secret if you want me to. Of course he said no way, he wanted to know too so I told him!

I actually looked at the Dr. when he said it would be a son and said "A boy?! I can't be having a boy?!!!" He looked a little shocked and said "Why can't you have a boy?" to which I explained that I already knew about girls, heck I am a girl, and that I had lots of beautiful hand-me-down clothing for a girl! The Dr. smiled and said "Don't you know that little boys love their mothers way more than little girls do?!" I told him that I must have missed that chapter in the parenting book, but that I would hold him to his statement!

Now, 18 years later, I can't say that the doc's words were 100% true as both of my kids are loving and kind. But he was right that I would be fine raising a boy.

I was never really a girlie girl, but through my son I learned to love dinosaurs, trains, trucks and anything big or loud! I learned how to eat at a lunch table full of boys who do the most disgusting things with their food! I learned that it's ok for me to say I love you on the phone, and he'll say "you too" which is the same thing only much cooler when in the company of his friends. I learned that I can play online computer games filled with tanks, guns, and lightsabers and sometimes even kick his butt and not get mine kicked instead!

But what I learned most of all was that being a mom is what I was meant to be. It wasn't something I ever knew I could be, or even thought I would be good at, but I've loved every minute of it! The good times, the bad times, the happy times, the sad times, even the mad times! I wouldn't trade it for the world!

So today I want to wish my very special "Bugs" a very Happy Birthday! I know that the sweet boy I once cuddled and sang to, is now a man I am proud to call my son! I love you and wish only the best for you as you head out into the world where I know without a doubt that you will make a difference! Just remember what I've always told you...that you will always have a soft place to land and that whoever you choose to marry has to LOVE your momma! xoxo

Whirlwind Weekend and A Winner

Well, it's hard to believe that it's Sunday evening already!  It's been a busy weekend filled with beautiful homes, great stores, and even nicer people!  On Friday I ventured up to a wonderful store called Brambles in Occoquan, Virginia that I'll be sharing with you in just a few days.  You won't want to miss this shop, it's filled with an eclectic mix of beautiful wares!

After my visit to the store, it was off to do scouting shots for some national publications.  And let me tell you that the two homes I visited were full of gorgeous eye candy!  I hope to be able to provide you all with a sneak peek at some point, but for now it's all hush hush!  And as lovely as both of these homes were, their owners were just as delightful.   I had a wonderful time meeting them and touring their great homes!

So because I can't go on and on without a little something to show you, here are some shots of Brambles, with more to come very soon!

And it's also time to name the winner for the recycled sailcloth pillow from CSN Stores!  Thank you again to everyone who spread the word about the giveaway, and for leaving your wonderful comments which I always enjoy reading!

The winner is #10 Chania from the lovely blog Razmataz.  Congratulations Chania!  Please contact me so that I can get the pillow sent off to you right away!

And don't forget to check back this week when I'll take you for a full tour of Brambles, and to see lots of other exciting things!  Until then my friends!

On The Road Again

Well my dear friends I am off for the next few days running the roads and being a shutter bug!  It's been a crazy week, some things went as planned and others went completely awry, but alls well that ends well!

Here are a few pretty blossom pics that Mr. Tide took today while I was off doing other things.  Enjoy, and I'll see you again on Sunday!

Have a wonderful weekend! xx

It's Not Easy Being Green

Photo:  NOAA

First of all, I want to thank everyone for your kind and understanding words about my "How I Met My House" post.  I'm not one to dwell in the past or have huge regrets, it's just not my style.  So I hemmed and hawed a bit about hitting the send button and then thought what the heck!  I did however feel like I had just sent naked pictures of myself to CNN or worse, TMZ!  But I think we all need a little "exposure" from time to time.  Maybe not naked pic exposure, but the kind that makes us human and lets others know that life isn't perfect all the time.  I like to say that people who think their lives are perfect are either in denial or already on medication! ;-)

Ok, so now on to more pressing matters!  Today is Earth Day and for me this day is a day filled with mixed emotions.  I want to be green, I try to be green, but I'd be lying if I said I led a super green lifestyle.  I live miles away from shopping and I own an SUV.  I do try and minimize my trips and take the Jetta instead of my Durango when I can.  And I would love to bike to the store, but here in the land of big ole pick up trucks and country roads I would be green by peddling along, but also likely squashed on the side of the road!

And I eat only organic produce, throw open my windows instead of using the AC, and try and buy green or recycled products whenever possible.  My family grows all organic blueberries, and we use no real fertilizers or weed killers in our yard...and it shows...hello clover, but hey it's green!  And I love re-purposing old things and finding ways to reuse the things that I have.  But let's face it, when you own as much stuff as I do, you know that you've contributed to manufacturers in all parts of the world where being green is more about the color of money than the environment.

So although I do more than some to be green, I clearly do way less than others.  But I will strive to do better, and if we all do that, well then things will get better.  My next project for improving the planet is to farm oysters in our creek.  Oysters are nature's water filters, and there is a project that allows local homeowners to raise oysters and help clean the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay, which sounds like something right up my alley!

I will of course still do other non environmentally friendly things though, like driving 2 hours to scout some homes for a magazine tomorrow!  So until I see you again on Sunday, I hope you find ways to be green, whatever shade of green that may be!

P.S. My current giveaway is made from recycled sailcloth! Click HERE to find out more!

How I Met My House

I'm joining AnNicole over at Our Suburban Cottage for her How I Met My House party!

I met my house just over 3 years ago.  We had lived in a suburban neighborhood for 11 years and I was ready for a change.  My kids were no longer little and things like swim team, soccer games, and bike paths had given way to college and driver's licenses for one child, and the beginnings of high school for our youngest.

I was also going through a huge personal change in my life at that time.  I had lost my mother after she suffered a stroke due to botched gallbladder surgery.  She went in to the hospital a healthy 68 year old woman and just a few days post surgery ended up unable to speak and vastly different than the woman we had known all our lives.  Although she was 100% there mentally, she would never be the same and just a year and a half after her horrific ordeal she wasn't feeling well again.  So we took her to Johns Hopkins Hospital only to find out that she had cancer and just 13 days later she died!  Apparently they had found the cancer when they removed her gallbladder initially and never told her!

Needless to say I was devastated and I spent the next few years tending to my father who had been diagnosed with a terminal lung condition just a few months prior to my mom's stroke!  With the help of my sister who lives locally we did our best to keep my father company, spend time with him, and generally help him out when he needed it.  I have two other siblings who live farther away and they also pitched in when they could.

About a year after my mother passed my father became involved with a woman who did not have his best interests at heart and to make a long story short, things during the last few years left us on less than ideal terms.

I had been looking around for some property even before all of this took place, but with my own personal chaos I began really trying to find a place with a bit of breathing room!  I needed it both physically and mentally.

So how do you deal with the stress of losing your mother and not speaking to your father who you saw nearly everyday of your life?!  You sell a house by owner, and buy a fixer upper!  Well technically our home wasn't a true fixer upper, but it wasn't what we had envisioned either.

It's an 11 year old rambler, and was not laid out at all like our spacious suburban oasis that we were leaving behind.  But every time we drove past this house, it called my name.  Even our son, who was 15 at the time and had spent most of his life in the same house and neighborhood, was completely on board with the move and said "There is just something about this place, it feels like home," each time we visited the new house.

The house is located on a private lane with only 5 homes on it.  I would have never even found the place, and I grew up in the area, if it hadn't been for my sister who told me to drive down this way.  She lives just down river from it and said that it was a lovely area.  So I got in my car one afternoon and drove down here.

There wasn't a for sale sign in sight, but I came home that afternoon determined to move to that street!  I even called a gentlemen who owned some of the land to see if he wanted to sell a lot, but found out that most of the empty land couldn't be built on and the only lot available was in the restricted area and was unbuildable due to it's waterfront location.

I continued to scour real estate websites for the next year, always with that one location in mind and then one day it happened!  Right in front of me on the computer screen was a little rambler that I knew the instant I saw it, and it was for sale!  I made Mr. Tide jump in the car and off we went.  Getting him to agree to drive past the house was one thing, but to go for a tour was quite another.

You see Mr. Tide has a complete aversion to brick...ie. he hates it!  And the fact that it was a rambler with a low slung roof and not a whole lot of curb appeal was yet another hurdle.  For me it was that it was located along a side of our county and on a river that I swore I would never live on.  So between the two of us, this house was everything and everywhere we said we would never want to live!

But we made an appointment to look inside anyway.  The house was owned by an elderly couple who were no longer able to live on their own.  The husband was not in good physical shape and the wife was having some symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.  They had a caregiver and when we came in they told us how much they loved the place and spoke of the beautiful tundra swans which were gracefully floating on the creek behind the house.

Kitchen Before

We went home and talked it over and decided that we needed to take another look.  Could we overcome the fact that there wasn't an attic, that it felt dark and cramped, that there were only 3 bedrooms, and very little storage compared to our big 5 bedroom colonial we would be ditching for this place?  That the kitchen had mauve countertops and that there was no walk in pantry?!  This time we took my sister back with us, and once again the elderly couple told us about their love of the house, and they asked if we were the "nice young couple that was going to buy the house?"  I had to leave the room and I burst in to tears.   Seeing them have to leave their home, even if it wasn't their forever home, was just too much, and it made me think of my parents and everything that was going on in my own life.

We did spreadsheets and calculations as to how we could make it all work.  We would sell our house for sale by owner, or rent it if necessary, we would save up and do the renovations we dreamed of for the new house and life would be perfect!  We did end up doing all of that, and sometimes it seems like a dream to me, and I have to pinch myself to know that it's all true!

Living Room Before

And we are that young couple that bought their home and love it dearly.  We love the water it's on, the bricks it's made of, and the fact that we're 8 miles from the nearest place to buy milk.  The stress of renovating was nothing compared to the stress of losing both of my parents and the sadness I had felt for the last few years.  But the sun seems to shine brighter here, the grass is greener, and even the flowers seem to bloom more profusely in our little home nestled in an old tobacco field.

 Living Room After

Kitchen After

Meeting my house was my saving grace and each day that I wake up in my sun filled bedroom I am thankful for all that I have and all that I've been through.  I wouldn't wish the last 6 years on my worst enemy, but I'm a stronger woman because of it, so I have no regrets.  Do I wish some things had been different, sure I do, but maybe, just maybe if they had been different I wouldn't be here and I wouldn't appreciate all that I have!  I see beautiful homes all the time for my work, but I wouldn't trade my match made in heaven for all the money or storage in the world!

Be sure to head over to Our Suburban Cottage to find out how more people met and married their homes!

Another Great Giveaway

I've mentioned my pillow obsession to you all before, and it's only growing worse.  Pretty soon I we won't be able to sit down on any piece of furniture thanks to this little addiction I've developed.

So I've restrained myself from buying yet another pillow, and I've decided to give you all a chance to win one instead.  You see, the wonderful folks over at CSN Stores.com, one of the largest online retailers in North America, has offered me a beautiful pillow to give to one lucky winner!

I selected this medium sized Ella Vickers recycled sailcloth pillow because I loved the red numbers, it's recycled, and well, because it's beachy and you know how much I love that!  Ella Vickers makes all sorts of cool things from recycled sailcloth and the pillow has a retail value of $80.

CSN Stores.com has lots of wonderful things to choose from including a selection of Thomas Paul pillows, another one of my favorites, and CSN has the best prices for these pillows that I've found online.  But CSN doesn't just sell pillows, you could get lost on their website looking at everything under the sun, including furniture, so be sure to check out their site if you're in the market for an entertainment center or corner tv stand.

So here's how to enter to win the pillow:

1.  Leave a comment telling me your favorite number.

2.  Tweet, Facebook, Blog about the Giveaway, or Become a Follower for a Second Chance to win (Please be sure to leave another comment letting me know if you've done one of these things)

The Giveaway will be open until Saturday, April 24th at Midnight PST.

Unfortunately, this giveaway is only open to residents of North America.

Winners, Typecasting, and Other Curiosities

Winners :  The winner of the signed Scott Kelby book is Lavender Dreams.  I know she will put this to good use as she LOVES taking beautiful photographs!  Congrats!  Thank you to everyone who entered, tweeted, blogged, and Facebooked about my giveaway, I truly do appreciate all of your support!

Typecasting :  It seems that if I want to be successful in the world of blogging I'm supposed to pick a topic, style, whatever and stick with it.  But that's just not me!  I love coastal decor, it's my own personal style, but the best part about life is that we're not all vanilla and we don't all want the same things.  So I hope you'll understand if I show you homes that are colonial, contemporary, and everything in between!

I have such a love and appreciation for all styles done beautifully that I just can't pigeonhole myself and show you only one thing or promise not to talk about my dogs, or my hair, or whatever enters this old pea brain of mine!  So if there is something you want to see more of, let me know.  I'm always interested in what you all think and want to see.  Just know that I'm kind of like that dog "Dug" from the movie UP, and I'm easily distracted so who knows what I'll be posting about from day to day!

The most important thing to me is not to feed you the same thing day in and day out, but to hopefully be the cherry on top of your dessert from time to time! xx

Curiosities :  Have I ever mentioned that I have some of the best dang friends on the planet?!  Well I do, and not just because they give me beautiful things either!  I came home the other day and there was a gigantic box sitting by my desk and it was from Pottery Barn.  Now for a minute I thought "wow is my blog so famous that Pottery Barn is now sending me loot?!"

Ok, that thought passed pretty quickly, but still...  When I opened the box there was a wonderful note from my friend "J" thanking me for hosting her daughter Katy's bridal shower a few weekends ago!   "J" is one of the kindest and most insightful people I know, and did I mention that she has exquisite taste too?!

She sent me this gorgeous Coastal Curiosities Platter which I LOVE!  And as soon as I opened it I was running around the house trying to find the perfect spot for it (I did phone to thank her before I ran around the house!).

I love the rich colors, the beautiful detailing, and how it looks on my drop leaf table in my living room, and I can't thank her enough for her sweet gift which was completely unnecessary!

Now all I need are these very cool matching plates, are you listening Pottery Barn?! ;-)
