Lenten Rose

These beautiful shade loving plants are also known as Hellebores but I prefer to call them Lenten Roses.

The silver moon variety, which I have, start out as a lovely shade of cream and then mature to a dusty rose color.  They are called Lenten Roses because their blooms coincide with Lent, making them one of the first flowers to bloom in the late winter garden.

If planted in a nice shady spot with fertile soil, these perennials will spread like wildfire and give both you and your shade garden plenty of early blooming beauty while everything else is still sleeping.  And their blooms last for a very long time making them perfect for photo ops, so I think they are just about perfect.

Do you grow Hellebores aka Lenten Roses in your garden?

  4. Love hellebore but can't grow them here - especially miss corsican hellebore with its otherworldly green flowers: they are all so ELEGANT aren't they!?

  5. Hi Kat,
There are a few that are hardy here, but I haven't tried them in my garden yet. I know a couple of my friends have some luck with them. They are so pretty and I would love to give them a try. Your photos are beautiful. (always)

Thank you sweet for your comment. Made my day!
    hugs from here...

  8. Yours are beautiful. I planted 3 of them three years ago. Two of my plants are still the same size as when I planted them and the third has probably tripled in size but is not blooming. No one in my area seems to be able to tell me what I need to do for them and I live in the nursery capital of the US.

  9. This is yet another flower that I have not heard of before, but I do love the idea behind the Lenten Rose name. And for them to start out creme colored and then fade to dusty rose sounds like the kind of dreamy flower I would really enjoy. I need to find out if I can find them around here. xo ~Lili
