Me, Dave, and Old Man Winter

Old Man Winter decided to make an appearance today.  He didn't come in quietly, or even gradually, but instead he flung the door wide open and ushered in an icy cold wind that could knock you off your feet.

Now I know it's January, and I get that the weather shouldn't be balmy, but I've managed to live in a bit of denial since October because we've had such unseasonably warm weather these past few months.  As our cold loving daughter lamented the lack of a chill in the air, I was dancing a jig at the fact that it was in the 60s over the holidays.

If you've been hanging out here for any length of time, then you are well aware that I'm a warm weather sort of person.  I love everything hot, well except maybe soup, but other than that I love warm weather sports, t-shirts, flip flops, the beach, and anything even remotely tropical.

Even as a kid, my mother would get frustrated on snow days when, after spending some time bundling me all up to go brave the cold, I would promptly return 20 minutes later in search of a cup of cocoa and a few marshmallows.  I think I only went outside so that I could get that cup of steaming hot chocolate.  You know, it doesn't seem right to drink it just for the sake of drinking it, you have to be freezing cold so that it can bring some sense of feeling back into your hands when you hug that warm mug.

There are only two wintertime activities that I actually enjoy, one is ice skating, and the other is sledding.  But since we rarely get enough snow to sled, and it hasn't been cold enough for the ponds or creeks to freeze solidly enough to skate on in years here, well then I kind of quietly pass the time until those first buds warm my heart and remind me that winter is done.

I'm not a grump during winter, and I do enjoy seeing the swans return to our creek each winter, but I mostly enjoy this season from the comforts of a well heated environment.  So Old Man Winter, if you are so inclined, why not give yourself a little rest this year and move on down the road.  In case you needed some sort of permission, I'm giving it to you right here and now, to let spring come a wee bit early this year.

And to those of you who love winter, I get it, I don't begrudge you this season.  Nope, I say enjoy every blustery day and sub zero temp you can find.  But just as you hate high heat and humidity, I don't take a cotton to your beloved cold and grey skies, so let's just agree to disagree, shall we?  :-)

When I think of grey days (yes I prefer the "e" spelling of grey), I think of this particular song.  And on a completely different topic, I promised Lili that I would one day tell my Dave story, so here goes.

I am a big Dave Matthews fan, not like a crazy stalker kind of person, but I love his music.  It makes me want to dance, sing, and it just makes me smile.  Mr. Tide on the other hand, not so much.  As a sax and trumpet player himself, he can tolerate the bits where Dave's band gets down with their horn section, but other than that, let's just say that I listen to Dave mostly in the car when I'm driving alone.

About 10 or 11 years ago, Dave was going to be in our neck of the woods, or at least within 2 1/2 hours, so Mr. Tide surprised me with tickets.  I was thrilled, I had always wanted to see Dave in concert, so this was way cool for me.

On the day of the concert we took the kids over to my parent's house to spend the day and have a sleepover, and we jumped in our almost brand spankin new Jetta, opened the sunroof, and headed on our way.  What should have been a 2 1/2 hour drive ended up being more like a 4 1/2 hour drive, and to this day we aren't sure if there was an accident or what, but it was a LONG drive.

We pulled in to the parking lot of the venue, which was a big open air concert place and we sat there for about 45 minutes waiting until the gates opened.  As we sat there I noticed something, everyone around us was far from like us.  They were all young 20 somethings, most likely college students, and many of them had been partying for a few hours by this point.  On the other end of the spectrum were a handful of older folks, as in much older, who clearly had lost their way when the Grateful Dead quit touring, and I guess Dave was a good substitute....I can see that.  But the former Dead followers were about .00005% of the general concert populace by all of my calculations.

The gates finally opened, and we wandered up to the entrance, and the  closer I got the more I thought that one of two things was about to happen.  I was either going to have the concert experience of my dreams, or I was going to be vomited on by a very drunk 20 something...odds were heavily favoring the latter since it was open seating in a field.

I looked at Mr. Tide and said, "would you mind if we just sold the tickets and headed home?"  Now bear in mind, that this wonderful husband of mine, who just drove over 4 hours to a concert you couldn't have gotten him to go to but for love or money, in this case love, looked at me like I had lost my mind.

As with any sold out concert, and Dave sells out months in advance, there were numerous folks standing at the entrance, hands held high with the number of tickets they so desperately needed.  We approached a young couple and asked if they wanted to buy ours.  They told us how they had seen Dave the night before in Pennsylvania and how they were so "stoked" to hopefully see him again that night.  I explained that although I loved Dave, I felt a wee bit old and out of place, which was followed by a lot of things like, "nah man, you're not old, you should go in man, he is so awesome in concert...like seriously!"

Their words of reassurance only cemented the conclusion I had already come to on my own.  When we explained that we just wanted what we had paid for the tickets, they almost jumped up and down and asked if we were sure.  I explained that with two children at home I wasn't really game to use our one phone call to let our family know that we were now in a Virginia jail for scalping tickets.  They gave us cash for the tickets, and gleefully ran into the venue.  Had I been 20 years younger I could have been them!

So back in the car we went, taking a different way home, where we dined at Mikey D's and had ice cream at one of our favorite places in Virginia.  Driving down those back roads, with the sunroof open, and Dave blaring on the car stereo seemed almost better than being with him live.  So maybe Dave and winter aren't that dissimilar for me, I enjoy them from the comfort of my own home.

I have told Mr. Tide, that if Dave ever comes to a much smaller, more civilized venue, appropriate for old folks like me, that I would love to go.  So what do you think the chances of that ever happening really are?!  The odds, I'm betting slim to none. ;-)

Let It Snow

Well, things here at LTHS have been moving at a bit of a snail's pace.  My writing got a bit sidetracked because I wasn't feeling up to snuff on Thursday and Friday.  I decided I wasn't going to let that stop me from seeing a 50 foot Loch Ness float at the Scottish Walk in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday, but apparently it wasn't meant to be.

Our sweet Miss Kylee, our older Border Collie, required an emergency trip to the vet on Saturday morning.  Her heart condition continues to worsen, and I wasn't about to leave Mr. Tide with a puppy and a very sick dog to care for while I went gallivanting around the countryside, so I stayed home.

They have adjusted Kylee's meds once again, so fingers crossed that she'll do better on this new dosage and that she'll be back to her happy, active self...which she already is for the most part.  It was a scary time though and we all cried, including me, Mr. Tide and the vet on Saturday when the going was particularly rough!

Even though Nessie and I did not have a chance to meet, it was a wonderful weekend once we got animals and people squared away.  My daughter, who came home, and I went to lunch and did some shopping late Saturday afternoon.  And Saturday evening, we visited a local horse farm that goes all out decorating for the holidays.  It's called Flat Iron Farm and besides having lights galore, they also open their stables and several shops up during Christmastime to get everyone in the mood for the holidays!

We took little Misty Belle with us and held her as we wandered around the stables looking at the beautiful horses and a variety of other animals that live on the farm.  The stables at this place are nicer than some people's homes, and I know Misty remembered the scent of hay and horses since she was born on a horse farm!  It even began to snow while we were there, so it was a restful end to a very emotional and hectic day...it was perfect.

It was just what I needed to get my unmotivated self in the mood to decorate my own house.  For some reason I've been dragging my feet this year, even though I've been excited about the prospect of putting out my Christmas decor for months now.

So when we got home I asked Mr. Tide to head out into the garage and start bringing in the bins of decorations.  He quickly suggested we watch a movie instead, so we sat down with our daughter and enjoyed the new Alice in Wonderland movie on Netflix.

I was a little more persuasive on Sunday though and got him to lug everything in so that I could start getting this house ready for a visit from Santa!

You may recall the post I did (here) about how I decorated the wide window ledge above my kitchen sink last year for a holiday party we hosted.  I'm one of those weird people who likes to change things from year to year, which also means lots of tubs since I seem to add to my collections every year, so this year I wanted to do something a little different.

I loved how the lights looked in my mason jars last year, so I knew I wanted to repeat that look, but I wanted to go with more of an all white theme  instead of the greens I used last year.  So out came my fake snow, which consists of cotton batting with flecks of mica on it.  Then I added white lights with white cords...FYI don't send an 18 year old to buy your lights at Lowes...let's just say that he wasn't batting 1000 with purchasing what I wanted....read the box hun!  He was quick to politely remind me that he did at least buy the lights and that maybe next time I should get them myself...point taken! :-)

I added several small mason jars this year as well for a little extra light, plunked one of my glass snowmen and some sparkly birds scattered about on the snow.  Then I added some icy branches to each of the tall mason jars and tucked a few branches behind the middle one for a little something extra.  Then for a bit of whimsy and color, I added the two adorable chilly penguins that my daughter gave me for my birthday a few years ago.  One of the benefits of having a December birthday is that you get cute holiday decor.  I think I'm at my decor limit though these days, but I do treasure the things I've received over the years!  Every year when I open the bins it's like opening a bunch of Christmas packages as I'm greeted by my old favorites and surprised by a few things I've forgotten about or ones I purchased after the holidays and haven't ever used!

I hope each of you had a productive and wonderful weekend and please check back this week as I'll be sharing with you several wonderful sales that will be happening in southern Maryland and northern Virginia this weekend.  One is a sale at my friend Susan's house which I showed you HERE.  She has decided to part with some of her very special things and has invited a few friends to join in and clean out their "closets" too, so if you're in the area you won't want to miss it!  I'll be posting more info and pictures in an upcoming post so stay tuned!

Until then my friends!!

Can You Believe It

Can you believe that it's already December?!  I can't...but this little guy can!

I noticed after I took these pictures that he's missing a bit of coal from his left cheek, so he's a little wonky...kind of like me, and I think I'll leave him just the way he is!

One story down and two more to go...Nessie here I come!

Happy December 1st Everyone!!!

Studio Three Part 2 and A Giveaway

Yesterday I took you on a tour of a store in La Plata, Maryland called Studio Three Flowers.  As I mentioned in my last post, Studio Three will be hosting their annual open house this weekend from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm so they've been busy decorating the store for the holiday season...and it's beautiful!

Yesterday I showed you mostly overall shots of how the store looks, but in today's post I wanted to get up close and personal and share some of the wonderful items they have used to create this winter wonderland!

And be sure to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the post to find out about a lovely giveaway!!!

I think what makes these trees and this store so special is the lavish way in which each tree and the entire store is lovingly decorated.  It truly is a sight to behold!

The trees are all done in a different theme and you really have to stand and stare at them for awhile to appreciate all of the wonderful individual ornaments, silk flowers, and ribbon on each one.

Musical instruments filled this tree...

As well as beautiful European style ornaments in a variety of themes.

My daughter goes to the ballet each year to see the Nutcracker, so she would appreciate these lovely sequined fellows!

This tree was my favorite of all the trees in the shop, which is really saying something since all of the trees are magnificent!!  It had a chartreuse and white theme and Anne Ford, one of the owners, had used gorgeous silk tulips and shimmering branches at the top of the tree to create a little unexpected sparkle and drama.

Dripping in icicles, flocked branches kissed with snow, and strewn with sparkling seashells, it immediately caught my eye.  It was so completely fresh and different, and I thought to myself, "wouldn't this be perfect for a winter wedding!"

I also loved this beautiful nativity set.  Its simple antiqued white color with a touch of glitter would be beautiful on an entry table or just about anywhere!

Here is more of the set atop a mantle...so pretty!

I mentioned my love of snowmen in my last post, and this one almost came home with me.  Look at that faux fur scarf, and his top hat made from tree bark!  Looks like Frosty has had a makeover!!

Snow 'men' aren't the only ones who can look fetching during the winter months.  This little snow girl was happy to be safely nestled in the branches of the snow themed tree this year.

Butterfiles seem to be all the rage this year for Christmas, and this be jeweled beauty was ready to take flight.

If visions of sugar plums dance in your head, then this candy cane confection is sure to please.

I think I saw a teddy bear or two trying to steal a few licks when no one was looking!

Creative ideas are everywhere at Studio Three, including this wonderful tree!

What a wonderfully clever idea to use this sample staircase leading up to this lovely tree...this is such a great idea, and I've never seen anything quite like it!

Of course you all know me, I couldn't leave the store without a little something for myself...I mean I've not been naughty...only nice, I promise!

It turns out it wasn't me who was nice, but Studio Three owners Anne and David Ford who were more than just nice...they were extremely generous as well!  I spied these darling little swirly peppermint puffs as soon as I walked in, and Anne and David gave me some to take home...sweets for the sweet they said.  Ok, they didn't actually say that, but they did give them to me, and I was thrilled, thank you Anne and David!!!

I bought some other things as well, but you'll just have to wait until after Thanksgiving when I will be hauling out the bins and putting up my new favorite finds...including the lovelies I bought from Studio Three!

After the shoot, and before I was treated to a lovely lunch with my friends Doug and Joan Vogel...thank you again, Anne gave me a beautiful gift bag with a special treat for one of my readers!

This isn't just any treat, it's a gorgeous Lampe Berger oil lamp from the Limoges Lampe Mandolino line.  An ethereal angel playing a lute graces both sides of the white Limoges bisque lamp, and it is a work of art in and of itself.

But you don't just get this beautiful lamp, this is a gift set that includes a leaded gold top, burner, instructions for using the lamp, a funnel, and of course fragrance oil.  The fragrance oil included is "Ocean Breeze," sounds soothing doesn't it?!

I took the lamp portion out just long enough to snap a few pictures, and I have to admit that it looked right at home on my white bucket bench!!!  Hmm, did I say to Anne that I would give this away....I'm feeling a little fuzzy on that!! ;-)

If you are familiar with Lampe Berger then you know they have a long history of provided soothing fragrances that not only make a home fresh and welcoming, but they also help clean the air by actually eliminating odors.  And they are also beautiful objets d'art!

I can't thank Anne and David Ford enough for giving me this lovely gift valued at $120.00.  And the best part is that one of you will get to win it!!!  Thank you Anne, David, Doug and Studio Three!!!

Before I get to the Giveaway details, I want to remind you that Studio Three Flowers will be hosting their Holiday Open House this Saturday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm.  There will be door prizes and lots more, so if you live near La Plata, Maryland...or within driving distance...be sure to stop by and please tell them Kat from Low Tide High Style said hi!!

I Swore I Wouldn't

I'm actually one of those people who has always hated when stores put out Christmas decorations before at least the middle of November.  I've always groaned and moaned when I walk into one of the big box stores and see Christmas trees up before Halloween has even taken place.  Or when I open my mailbox and see catalogs hocking their holiday wares long before we've even had Thanksgiving dinner....but...and it's a big but...

This year I can't wait to get started on my Christmas decorating!   I even blissfully wandered through the aisles at Walmart recently looking over their holiday decorations!   Gasp...could it be that I'm mellowing in my old age?!  I must admit that I think this might have a little something to do with my blogging...but whatever the reason I'm raring to go this year!

I've always been a independent retailer kind of girl.  There is something so wonderful and intimate about visiting the smaller stores, often filled with one of a kind items, and browsing around while chatting with the owners, many of whom are friends.  This week I was lucky enough to not only visit a shop, but to also photograph their lovely Christmas wares!

My dear friend and talented floral designer Doug Vogel invited me to tour the shop where he now works called Studio Three Flowers in La Plata, Maryland.  Doug started working there a few months back and when he invited me to come out and see the shop all decorated for their holiday open house this weekend, I couldn't pass up the opportunity!

Doug is a very talented floral designer, so when he said the shop looked beautiful I knew I would have my breath taken away, and I wasn't disappointed!  There were trees in every size and shape, each with a different theme, and all were beautifully and meticulously done by one of the owners, Anne Ford.

From the moment I stepped inside the door I was transported to a winter wonderland full of sparklies and shimmering pretties!  Anne and her husband David not only sell lovely fresh flower arrangements at their shop, but also a wonderful assortment of gifts and decor!

There were so many great things to look at that I had to do a few laps around the shop before I could even begin taking photographs.  The place is trimmed from head to toe in anticipation of their holiday open house entitled "Celebrate the Season" which will be held this Saturday, November 13th from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

There will be door prizes and plenty of inspiration, so if you live anywhere near La Plata, I encourage you to go!

Doug and his lovely wife Joan showed me around Studio Three pointing out all of the wonderful items for sale.  There really was something for everyone, and I had a hard time just snapping pictures and not grabbing everything in sight!

I loved these deer and think they would be perfect for the fall and the winter months, not just at Christmastime.

There were flocked trees trees simply adorned with bright red cardinals...

And pudgy little glass Santas with quirky little caps!  Crackled candlesticks topped with red berry garlands and chunky red pillar candles!

Anne Ford is the creative genius behind the beautiful trees scattered throughout the store.  She has worked tirelessly getting them ready for the open house this weekend and it shows!

This gold, green, and red tree was dressed to the nines, with elegant red silk roses and shimmering gold adornments.  And the best part is that everything you see on the trees is for sale, so you can recreate the look on your own tree at home!

These trees were all so beautifully done that I wouldn't be surprised if someone walks in this weekend and offers to purchase the entire tree to use in their own home!

I loved this pink fashionista inspired tree...

Check out this darling glass purse ornament.  Don't you just love the pink mixed with the zebra stripes...adorable!

And if the purse ornament wasn't cute enough...check out the leopard prints balls...meow!

Studio Three has so much more than just beautiful flowers and lovely Christmas items though, they also carry and array of gifts and home decor, like these cute little mini chandeliers.

Seasonal wreaths are always available, or you can have one custom made.  There are tiny tea sets, and even dolls for the child in all of us!

And check out this faux fur coat for that special little princess in your life...too cute!

They also carry an assortment of home fragrance products, including candles, and the always elegant Lampe Berger line!

Studio Three also carries unique serveware and tasty treats which make wonderful hostess gifts, stocking stuffers, or thank you gifts for that special teacher.

And of course there are lots of things to give to yourself...you know, as a thank you gift for all you do each year! ;-)

Everywhere you turn there is inspiration...so much so that I'll be doing a second post to show you more photos since there were too many pictures to put into just one post!

I love the idea of adding a shear skirt to a fern stand to dress it up for the holidays.  And just look at that gorgeous silk floral arrangement...can't you just imagine that in your foyer to welcome holiday guests?!

I have a real thing for snowmen, and Studio Three has lots of cute little snow people to go around!  I love that you can keep snowmen out long after the Christmas tree comes down, and they always seem so happy and cheerful...something I can appreciate during those dreary winter months.

This icy tree was all dressed up in glittering white branches, sparkling glass garland, and puffs of white snow.  The darling snowmen that hung from the branches looked quite at home here...at least until the open house when they will be snatched up to go live at their new homes!

I will be doing a second post about Studio Three Flowers tomorrow, and showing you more beautiful things you can can purchase.  Anne and David are working on their website, so if you see something and can't visit their store, be sure to give them a call to see if they can ship it to you!

I will also have a special surprise giveaway in my second post...a lovely treat that I know you will all love!  And I'll also share with you a few things I picked up for myself...the dangers of doing photo shoots in stores! ;-)

Thanks so much to Doug Vogel and his wonderful wife Joan for telling me about Studio Three...and to Anne and David Ford for welcoming me into their shop!  I'm not a paid spokesperson for either Doug or Studio Three, I just love their work and want to share it with others!  So if you live in southern Maryland and you need beautiful flowers, or a special gift be sure to contact them!

Stay tuned...there's more to come!
