The World in Black and White

I don't often voice my political or religious views on this blog, it's something I'm just not comfortable doing.  I believe that each of us is entitled to those views, to live our lives in a moral and just way, but sometimes things seem a little bass ackwards to me.

I had planned to chat about my new dining room chairs that I got for a steal yesterday at the Restoration Hardware outlet.

Regale you with tales of how, after a 3 hour drive each way, I lucked into a Pottery Barn outlet closing where the already reduced merchandise was another 40% off.  How I bought a beautiful ticking striped duvet cover and this pretty white platter for a song.

I wanted to tell you how delicious these organic honey crisp apples are, and how they are totally worth the long trip to Whole Foods to buy them.

I planned to go on and on about these pretty white napkins, also found at the Pottery Barn closing sale.

How I've been looking for some nice white napkins at a good price and how these were like a match made in heaven for my new dining room.   But...

Last night, as I sat down to catch up on the day's emails, do some blog reading, and skim through the online news sources, I was confronted with something that makes all of my great purchases seem more than just a little insignificant.

You see, sometimes we like to paint the world as black and white, but there is so much grey area in this world of ours.  Sometimes black and white is a good thing, like in these two photos of Misty Belle and Mr. Quinn, but sometimes, when it is used in a way that is hurtful, it's anything but beautiful.

As a blogger, I now have a sense of fellowship that only other bloggers can know.  Especially bloggers who use their blogs to share a little bit of themselves with each of us.  Those who put their heart and soul on the line for the world to see, the good, the bad and even the ugly that comes with living a real and authentic life.  So when one of us is having issues, I feel like we need to all step in and help out, even if that just means moral support.

Such is the case for Mark and his blog, entitled Our Simple Lives.  Kind of an ironic name for his blog, because life has been anything but simple for Mark and his partner Fred, and their 4 children.  You see, Mark and Fred are a gay couple who have adopted 4 children.

Now, some of you may be running for the hills right now, and that's your prerogative to do so, I surely can't, nor will I try to stop you.  But if you have a moment I'd like to say what I think about their current situation.

You can read much more about it on Mark's blog, and on CNN, where it made front page news yesterday.  Fred is a French Citizen, while Mark is an American citizen.  The two fell in love, got married when it was legal in the State of California, and have adopted 4 beautiful and thriving children.  They have been together longer than many couples seem to be able to make it these days, I believe it's 20 years, and the love they share for their children is undeniable and real.  As in the life is messy kind of real.

Because they are a gay couple, Fred now faces deportation, because even though they legally married in California a number of years ago, and Mark is a US citizen, our federal government doesn't recognize their marriage.  So now Fred must return to his home country after living her for 2 decades.

To those of you still reading, those who haven't unfollowed me, or made snap judgements, or turned away in disgust at the thought of a non traditional family, thank you.  You see, I would much rather see a family like Mark and Fred's, one which has contributed to society, worked hard for everything they have, and given 4 beautiful and innocent children the chance at a wonderful life, than I would half the people I see in what is deemed an appropriate marriage, dragging their children around Walmart at 11 pm.  Cursing at them, threatening them, but given the rights denied to Mark, Fred and their 4 children.

You have to ask yourself, why is it that our society rewards people who misbehave like Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Kim Kardasian with multi million dollar contracts for doing nothing to help society, while it penalizes people like Mark and Fred who kept 4 children from possibly knowing the instability and often horrors of the foster care system?!

As a magazine writer for beautiful homes, I have lots of gay friends, it just comes with the territory my friends.  So I can say that my world is a richer and more wonderful place because of those friendships.  So while you peruse the latest designs and heap praise on many notable designers, who just happen to also be gay, but then turn your back when you see the injustice of it all, well I would have to say that in my book that would be the definition of hypocritical.

You don't have to support gay marriage, or want marriage redefined, but when people like Mark and Fred's family will be torn apart because the world doesn't operate in black and white, I would hope you would at least try and support them so that our society could have one more stable family to help keep this country's future bright!

If you would like to learn about more ways you can support Mark and Fred, please go here.

Country Girl In The City

Ever since our daughter was born 23 years ago, her style and personality have been tough to pin down.  She loves going for drives in the country, but is equally at home cruising the streets of a major foreign city.   She can throw on shorts and head out in the kayaks, but loves to get dressed up and go to the ballet.

She is able to adapt to her environment, and even though she's not fond of change, she has learned to embrace a place once she is there and take in all that it has to offer.

After graduating from college, she decided she wanted to live by herself and explore the new city she calls home.  But after living on her own for the past year, she decided that having a roommate and moving to a different part of city would be a good change for her.

So a few weeks ago she packed up and headed to her new apartment.  It's in a great location, within walking distance of great shops, wonderful restaurants, and everything a 20 something could want!

When she showed it to us I was amazed at what a 23 year old can get when it comes to housing these days.  Of course it doesn't come cheaply when you live in the DC metro area, but wow, just look at the lobby of her building!

It's stylish, hip, and oh so chic...a far cry from any place Mr. Tide and I ever rented when we were that age!

Of course the hours are long at her job, she has to travel some, and well, working in the big city is always more stressful it seems, but she loves her new place and having someone to come home and talk about her day with, or share a meal together.

These photos were all taken without the benefit of a tripod, which is crucial for good indoor low light shots, but it was so pretty I just had to share it, so I snapped away...

I think it might be fun designing common areas for various apartment buildings.  You could try out all sorts of different styles and if you're anything like me, it would ease your inner design schizophrenia!

When I was little, I wanted a house where every room was done in a different style.  An Asian inspired room, French, Modern, you name it.  I always thought that would be so much fun and then you wouldn't have to settle on just one style!

I think Mr. Tide is happy I outgrew that notion!

By the time I got to my daughter's apartment after a day of running around shopping, it was getting dark.  But I wanted to show you a few things that she has done already with her wonderful new place.

Like these cute British and French inspired prints she found at Target.  She has spent a lot of time in both England and France, and they go perfectly with the black and white toile shower curtain she picked up!

The black and white theme, peppered with pops of red will help wake her up each morning as she prepares to head to her office!

In her bedroom she has filled one wall with a collection of frames and favorite photos.  Some are of her with friends and family, while others are photos she has taken during her many travels.

All the pictures were taken by my daughter, except for the one above.  It was a birthday gift from us recently, and it is the very handsome George, taken by the talented and sweet Kate of Chronicles of a Country Girl

Our daughter saw it over at Kate's Etsy store and told me how much she loved it and I have to agree, it is a wonderful picture!  I even picked up a wonderful yellow boat picture from Kate that I have yet to hang in my own home, it's so pretty that I am still searching for the perfect spot to put it!  And if Kate's pictures aren't beautiful enough, she is just as beautiful herself...she gifted me the picture of George and sent me a gorgeous picture of a daisy too...thank you Kate!

Our daughter is still deciding what sort of bed she wants...she had originally thought about a platform bed, but she's hasn't made up her mind yet.

She did find bedding she loved though, and it was on clearance from Pottery Barn...like mother like daughter, she loves a good bargain.  She already had the pink floral shams and a matching quilt, but added the crisp white monogrammed duvet and shams for a change of pace!  The light came from Ikea and adds a little funkiness to the room.

I tried to take some pictures of the living room, but with the evening light streaming through the french doors, (which lead out to a great balcony) it just wasn't going to happen without my bounce flash which I was too lazy to go get out of the car.

I was able to capture these gorgeous autumn colored tulips that she picked up at the store though!

She truly is my child and loves having fresh flowers in her apartment whenever possible!  These were simply beautiful and so perfect for this time of year!

And check out this kitchen!  It may not be huge, but it's certainly is nice for a rental apartment.  It has absolute black granite counters, stainless steel appliances and opens up onto the living room.

The galley design is compact and efficient but there is plenty of counter space.  And the bi-fold doors lead to a large laundry room which has shelving for even more storage.

Our daughter and her roommate each have their own bedrooms, both of which are en suite...which is so nice for two girls sharing an apartment.  I think the girls have done a great job already of making it home and infusing their own style into the space even though they've only been there for a few weeks.

I'm sure it will continue to evolve over time, just like the both of them will.  And with its perfect location, it really is a dream place to live when you're 20 something and living the life of a country girl transplanted in the big city!  I can't wait to visit often!

So Excited

Thank you all for the wonderful birthday wishes for my daughter.  She was so thrilled to see your comments on her photography and of course the great birthday greetings!

I hope each of you is having a wonderful weekend!  I know I am....it's absolutely glorious fall weather outside, time to pull out the fall decor and shop for pumpkins, gourds, and everything the season has to offer!

But before I head out the door, I want to show you a few gifts I recently received!  My dear friend Connie, from Hartwood Roses, sent me this gift!  I got home very late one evening last week, and I was so excited to find a package from her in my mailbox.

She knows how much I love anything crab related, and when she heard about my rough week, she thought of me and sent me these wonderful little crab placecard holders from Pottery Barn!  Aren't they too cute?!

Connie is always busy...this weekend she is off selling her beautiful roses in Richmond, Virginia.  I hope she has a wonderful sale!

But even with all she has going on, she took the time to mail me something she knew I would treasure!  I'm not surprised though, she is just like that and I'm so lucky to be able to call her my friend!  Thank you Connie, I can't wait to use these cute crabs with my crab plates for one last taste of summer!

I also wanted to share with you something else wonderful that was sent to me this week!  The other day it was cloudy and rainy here and when I stepped out on my back patio to let the dogs out, this is what I saw in the sky!  I was so excited and ran inside to grab the camera.

Call me crazy, but my friend Dan clearly sent me this little heart shaped cloud from above...I have no doubt!  And even though it is a bit of a broken heart, if you look closely at the upper left hand corner of the cloud, you'll see almost a perfect outline of a whole heart...so symbolic and so like him to let me know that he is happy and for me to not worry or be sad.

As it slowly drifted over the field and off across the water, I couldn't help but smile, even on such a gray and dreary day, knowing that those we love really are never that far away from us!

And last, but certainly not least in my book, I was over the moon last night when I stopped by my local Giant grocery store and saw a copy of this...the new issue of Romantic Country Magazine!  It's packed with wonderful articles and great decorating ideas for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas!

And there on page 34 was my name...Kat Warren, the author of the story on designer Dena Fishbein's gorgeous home!  And on page 16 is even one of the photos I took of Dena's beautiful bedding!  Now I know it's silly because I've been published now for 12 years in regional magazines, but I was giddy with happiness to know that I am finally in a national magazine.  Thank you Fifi for taking a chance on me!  And now my friends and family can just go to their local store and pick up a copy...so exciting!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Sometimes You Just Need To Laugh Out Loud

When your children are 22 and 18 like mine are, they will often send you funny emails or text messages.  Sometimes it's a link to a rap video parody that in your mind simply isn't funny and leaves you shaking your head and wanting to reply with something like, "Didn't we raise you better than that?  That video was horrible and the language...my word!"

But other times they are links to hilarious websites, funny pictures, or just plain cool stuff!  That was the case the past couple of days when my daughter sent me a link to a wonderful blog called Catalog Living

According to the website, Catalog Living is the brainchild of LA based actor, writer, and comedian, Molly Erdman.  Molly's humorous take on catalog spreads is seen through the eyes of the fictional couple (or are they?!), Gary and Elaine.

Gary and Elaine's witty repartee is channeled through Molly and results in some laugh out loud moments in regards to the serious world of merchandising by major companies such as Pottery Barn, Benjamin Moore, and others!  I certainly hope they aren't taking themselves too seriously and have sent Molly a thank you note for peddling their wares in a way they were too stodgy to think up themselves!

Below are just a few examples of Molly's clever comments, used with permission of course!

Elaine was certain there was a mistake in the latest arrival from the First Ladies Towel of the Month Club, but then she did a little research about Zachary Taylor and his lovely wife Margaret.

Not only are they super-cute, but ever since we installed these nets our household cases of malaria are down 75%!

We’re so happy you could visit!  The room’s all made up for you, and I ripped out some pages of my favorite book and taped them to your wall in case you’re like me and enjoy reading before bed.

I just love Molly's great sense of humor and the way she injects humor into these companies and their advertising!  Great job Molly and keep up the good work!!

The other thing I received this week from my daughter was a link to this very cool idea!  Impractical maybe, but cool...definitely!  I'm thinking that with a few throw pillows, not only would this tub turned sofa be comfy but it would be a show stopper in any house!!

This fab idea is courtesy of the artistic owners of Ruff House Art, which hails from Lawrence, Kansas, but you can find them on Etsy!

Not only does Ruff House Art create amazingly unique one of a kind tub couches, but they also make beautiful letterpress wedding invitations, note cards, coasters, calendars and more!  Of course, this gorgeous compass rose invite jumped right out at me.  Wouldn't this be perfect for nautical inspired nuptials?!

Thanks Angelfish for the links, which made me smile and ooh and ahh a bit too!

Be sure to visit Molly's wonderful blog Catalog Living for a good chuckle!

And check out Ruff House Art's Etsy Store by clicking HERE or to see more great photos of the tub couch blog by clicking HERE

Happy shopping!

Pretty Posies

Wow, I can't believe how many comments I have on my Jellybean Rug Giveaway already!  I knew you wonderful folks would love those very cute rugs!  If you haven't entered yet, there is still plenty of time...simply click HERE!

It's no real secret that I love flowers!  I post them on here all the time, and I have more jpeg files of flowers on my computer than you can shake a stick at!

Nothing makes me happier than to have flowers in every room of my home, and this week I have lots of them scattered throughout the house!

In my kitchen I have a vase filled with red carnations and yellow stargazer lilies.  These were left over from an engagement party that my dear friend the florist, Ms. M, did last weekend.  She gave me some of her leftover flowers to use for my garden club meeting on Monday.  I have lots of pictures to show you later this week of the gorgeous arrangements that she and her close friend and fellow florist, Doug, created for the party...you won't want to miss it!

In my dining room is another arrangement of flowers Ms. M gave me.  It had more hydrangea blossoms in it a few days ago, and as each flower dies I pluck them out and just enjoy the rest until they go to that big flower garden in the sky!

On my tiger maple table in the living room I have a small crystal vase filled with more of the red carnations.

And then in my hanging wall vase, which I got from Pottery Barn years ago, are just two shasta daisy blossoms which I picked from my front flower bed.

There is just something so wonderful about having cut flowers inside your home to bring a little of the outdoors in and to add a pop of color and some sweet fragrance!

Today, after being treated to a wonderful breakfast by my friend and fellow blogger, Annelise of Annie Wilcox Designs, I headed out to run some errands.  Not the important kind, but the fun kind, I was actually on the hunt for gumballs to fill up an old gumball machine I recently found.  Who knew finding gumballs these days would be so hard, and thankfully Annelise told me to try the local dollar store...Eureka!

Now it just so happens that the $1 store is right next door to a Tuesday Morning, so of course I had to pop inside and take a look.  And I found this great little turquoise pot for my back deck!  I love the pattern and the color and so does Mr. Quinn!  He has quite an eye for design and has to approve of all of my purchases!

While I was there, I decided to browse their book section to see if I could find some new design books to add to my ever growing library of magazines and books.

I stumbled upon three wonderful books including this one called Splendid Flowers for Every Day by Cindy Smith.  It is full of beautiful photos and great ideas, and it's a how-to guide for creating eye catching arrangements.  Noted floral designer Cindy Smith, whose celebrity clientele includes Elizabeth Taylor and Oprah Winfrey, teaches you step by step how to create the most wonderful flower arrangements!

Then I found this one entitled A Roomful of Flowers by master floral designer Paul Bott.  And as you would expect from the title, it's jam-packed with photos of beautiful rooms filled with lovely flowers!  Broken down by rooms, this book gives you brilliant inspiration, and the vignette shots are out of this world!

The last book I brought home with me is called The House In Bloom by Judy Spours and the Editors of Victoria Magazine.  If you've ever purchased a copy of Victoria, then you know that their photography and content is to die for, and this book certainly doesn't disappoint with it's gorgeous pictures and wonderful writing!

All three of these books will get plenty of use in my house.  I'm a very visual person and I love to leaf through a spectacularly photographed book to find inspiration and relaxation!

Where do you find your inspiration...magazines, books, online...or D. All of the Above?!
