Some Days

The geese are gone from the field...

The eagle in the background is too, now that the fields which had finally lost their blanket of white are now cloaked once more with powdery diamonds.

The bird feeders need replenishing, that will be this afternoon's task.

Some days the birds I like to call "bully" birds get to eat with abandon while their more shy, much smaller neighbors wait in the bushes for their turn.

And some days, upon closer inspection, I learn to appreciate the bully birds for their absolute beauty, even if my heart always goes out to the tiny underdog birds.  It's no wonder mankind invented fashion when you look at what mother nature did without a stylist!  You can see how we might get a little jealous over the millennia!

We have fresh snow and bitter temps here at Casa Low Tide, but I'm kind of embracing this winter and all of its chilly beauty.  That's not the case for so many who never see snow and are dealing with all the chaos that comes with snow and ice in the deep south, and to those of you stranded and suffering, my heart goes out to you.  It wasn't too many years ago that our daughter was stranded in the DC metro area for over 12 hours in her car on her way home from work, and she will be the first to tell you that it was NO fun!

I hope this icy grip will loosen its hold on you folks, and I hope the first responders who brave the elements, no matter how bad, will stay warm and out of harm's way.

  1. That's a beautiful jay photo, even though they really are bullies. I think they are, anyway. I do feel bad for all the folks in the south who had the horrible weather and were stranded in their cars. The lucky ones made it to grocery stores where they camped out in the aisles. The national guard took food to people and did what they could. It was all so crazy.

  2. I like Blue Jays. They may be selfish and overbearing, but not as bad as Grackles.

Today wasn't bad. The temps were frigid, but it was sunny and calm. We only got a scant inch of snow here.

  4. You certainly get some beautiful pictures-but then you always do. I know- I have a love/hate relationship with the Bird Bullies at our feeders, too.
Hoping EVERYONE in the Deep Freeze recovers soon. We have MORE snow coming tomorrow- Oh Joy! NOT- xo Diana

  5. Great photos! My favorite is the ruffled topknot of the bluejay.
I think we are all just waiting for spring to peek around the corner this year.
    Have a wonderful week.

  6. We feed with safflower seeds only so we have no bluejays but lots of red birds and chickadees. The safflower keeps the squirrels away pretty much. Yes, we have snow and it is cold. We did not have people trapped on roads like Atlanta did thankfully. I am just staying home. I have enough issues without falling-no such thing as a snow boot for me. Gosh I sound old. xo, olive

  7. The blue jay has stunning plumage, but the little bird by it doesn't look too impressed.

  8. Stunning blue jay!!! I just bought a good pair of binoculars to take up to Maine. We'll be doing lots of bird watching this summer. Will bring my camera and if the photos turn out good, I'll share. I plan on studying your shots :)

  10. Beautiful photos, Kat! The one with the eagle flying over the geese is amazing! We had another 6" today...my husband had to shovel part of the yard, so the dogs could go out without totally disappearing under the snow lol!

  11. Kat- that bluejay photo is just gorgeous-- we love ours-- they are actually not too mean- maybe because we put out lots of food--

Beautiful birds are one of the good things about winter-- one of the few-- lol!

  12. I admit I am a bluejay lover. I am trying to figure out what tousled his feathers like that? Perhaps a bluejay hater? lol xo

  13. It's been such a strange winter for so many. Here it's all the same old fog and mist, but mercifully, no snow.
