It's Been Awhile

I would love to tell you that my absence has been due to some fabulous trip abroad, or here on my own continent for that matter.

I would love to say that I've had so many social engagements that I couldn't possibly pull together a post, or even slip in a tweet, but the truth is I've been busy with life.  Busy with laundry, busy with yard work,  busy with work (lots of work), busy with my family, busy with puppy dogs, busy watching amazing athletes...you know just living life.

A simple existence that allows me to pick blueberries fresh from the field or roam favorite shops and pick up vintage ironstone that is crazed and yellowed through years of loving use.  I've been a bit of a recluse this summer and I have to say that I'm kind of enjoying it, mostly because I know it won't last, just like the warm breezes that blow through each evening and make the heat seem a little more bearable this time of year.

Mr. Tide and I are planning a bit of a getaway, but we can't seem to decide where to go...Maine?...Colorado?...South Carolina?  Our hearts long to be back in France, but our pocketbook and my lack of a current passport say otherwise.

So tell me, where would you go, what tiny town, big city, or special place would you direct me to.  A place that you think everyone should see even once in their lifetime?  Do tell...because we're at a bit of a loss as to which direction the wind should take us.  And I'll even make you a deal...if we go to where you tell us to go, I will take a picture of that special place and send it to you on a lovely stretched canvas...assuming you like the picture of course!

And because it's been awhile since I posted a song, I thought you might enjoy this one.  It's lovely and quite soothing to listen to when you are looking at travel sites and tearing your hair out as to where to venture...such problems to have, I suppose?!

  1. I was going to say Prince Edward Island Kat, then remembered the passport...

How beautiful your page looks when it first pops up, the colours in your header, the blueberries and the iris which was there when I first clicked on!

  2. Maine! I have been wishing I was there this entire hot summer! I am getting the kids back in school which includes painting a fraternity house room the next few days - ugh - but I want to call you next week about art stuff. I am eager to hear about your experience.

  3. Asheville. I've always wanted to go to Biltmore, and I haven't made it there yet. You can go there, and tell me all about it, and it will almost be as if I was there, too. (The mountains of western NC are a lot cooler than here in the summer.)

  4. I would choose a trip to Maine, only because it's one of those states we are considering retiring in and I want to go and snoop around for a few days.

  5. I can completely relate to you Kat - I'm off work for two weeks with my kids and my days are hectic! This is no holiday! If I were you I would drive down to New Orleans as it looks such an amazing place and is somewhere I've always wanted to go. If it were within driving distance of me that's where I would go.
Wherever you go I hope you manage to unwind and relax a little xx

  6. All three of those are beautiful places! We have a special affinity for Rocky Mtn National Park and Red Rocks Park in Colorado. Wherever you go, your companion is what makes it special!

  7. If I were you and wanted to get away from it all....I would go to Jekyll Island...and St. Simon's Island . Jekyll has one of the nicest NEW Hampton Inns we've ever stayed in. And secluded pristine beaches! We ate a lot of our meals on St. Simon's Island but that's very close...just over a bridge! It's one of my favorite getaways in the world!

  8. I presume we don't have to stick to the three places you mentioned, although all three of them are on my list. Being that I'm from central N. America I have a long list of things to see in western N. America. Is that too far to get to? Here are some of the places on my USA list:

    - San Francisco, along with Bodega Bay, Napa Valley (if you go here then you have to watch both The Birds and Vertigo as both movies are set here)
    - Tybee Island and Charleston, South Carolina. Maybe you have already been there since it is closer to you than it is to me, but I've always had a hankering to go and see some good southern architecture and eat some good southern food.
    - Yellowstone National Park - it is just gorgeous and very relaxing as there is so much to do. The area around it is also pretty.
    - the Grand Canyon along with Zion National park - and I know there are other gorgeous parks within about a 5 hour drive from these two, but I actually can't remember their names right now. It seems to be the motherload of gorgeous parks in that area though.
    - I've always wanted to see Boston, but you live closer so probably have seen it lots. If not then it would be on my list along with Cape Cod ... but you have to do it in the cooler weather in the fall so you can walk hand-in-hand along misty beaches wearing thick woolen sweaters.

Lots to think about. I'm dying to know where you chose to go. Are you able to come to Canada? I thought you only needed a driver's licence to cross our border. If so then I have lots to add to my already extensive list ;)

  9. Cades Cove, Tennessee. It is a National Park. Stay in Gatlinburg. The park has hundreds of photography possibilities. Look it up on Google. Professional photographers are always there at sunrise taking photos of deer, the cabins, and the churches. I love the place. You can bike the eleven mile driving trail on Saturday morning sans cars.

  10. You know I'm going to tell you Maine, aren't you? Especially if you're going in the summertime. Maine Maine Maine Maine. Specifically Mount Desert Island or off-island with the island as your view.

  11. You could also try Deer Isle which is much more quiet than MDI and Acadia National Park. Deer Isle is gorgeous, quaint, and I'd go there in a heartbeat. Stonington is the biggest town. We stayed on the 'sunset' side of the island near the Frederick L. Olmsted's former summer home.

  12. Well....I think you should come to Fredericksburg, Texas. :-)

  13. I am going to throw Jekyll Island into the mix. It is relatively quiet and unassuming.

We also love the UP of Michigan along Lake Superior. Pictured Rocks National Park is there. Quiet, small town and a throw back to earlier times.

I can't wait to see where you end up- xo Diana

  15. I would choose Maine, it's driveable from Maryland, and the roads are not insane once you get to CT. Then I would go to Arcadia National Park, it's heaven on earth, and everyone should see it at least once in their lifetime!

There's so much to see and do. I would also take the U.S Route 1 coastal route beginning around Freeport, ME, the towns are stunning, especially Thomaston, Camden and Belfast, Ellsworth and Hancock to name a few.

The antiques are gorgeous and you'll be able to bring home some wild Maine blueberries! So bring a cooler!

    xoxo!

  16. I'm glad to see you back to blogging. So many bloggers have vanished over the years and I hate seeing them go.
I can't tell you where to vacation. I like being at home!
    Good luck!

  17. I haven't been blogging as much either Kat! Life does have a way of just getting in the way doesn't it! My first thought would be to go to Maine. It is just beautiful this time of year. I am so jealous if that is the destination you pick-LOL!!! HUGS!

  18. Hi, Kat!
Glad you are back! We are planning a road trip to Maine....so I vote for Maine. It's been many years since I visited, so really looking forward....especially all that lobster :) Also, how about Hudson, NY? Or even NYC?
    Cheers,

  19. Such lovely photos, Kat! Living daily life...sounds like what is important to me! Hope you are enjoying your time and find a special getaway place! I am wanting to visit Savannah (I lived there as a girl), but maybe in the spring when it is cooler and everything is in bloom...

  20. How about a trip to Florida's Suncoast? Specifically, Siesta Key, Venice or Boca Grande. I live in Venice and truly feel like I live where everyone else wants to vacation!

  21. We LOVE Kiawah Island and Charleston and simply cannot wait to get back. We loved it so much that we are considering retiring there. Beautiful-and so very historic. Have fun with your decision!

  22. How about the Oregon Coast!... I've never been, but long to go.. hopefully some time soon.

  23. I would suggest Asheville, North Carolina. Our darling daughter is living there now and loving it. We've made two trips and there is something very appealing about the city. It's very vibrant, but at the same time, very laid back. WONDERFUL restaurants and bars; go on a brews cruise--very interesting and fun; and, of course, Biltmore, the Vanderbilt estate. It is truly not to be missed. But what I love most about it is getting off into the mountains and just going, whichever direction you like. You will not be disappointed--the views are incredible. We stayed at the Pisgah Inn--not at all fancy but a perfect location for hiking, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, dining, and just breathing deep and feeling your lungs fill with real fresh air. A wonderful break from all things DC...

  24. y first pick would be Toronto because there are so many cultural things to do and Niagara-on-the-Lake is pretty too but you would need your passport. My next pick would be Chicago because it too has so many things to do.
