Artistically Speaking

I don't claim to be a connoisseur of fine art, in fact some art which is highly valued would be pieces I would walk right by and maybe even think were downright ugly!   I took an art history course my freshman year of college and I really did enjoy it and can still identify a flying buttress or Corinthian column as well as the next person, but I just never got into visiting museums, watching foreign films, or being able to spot a certain designer from across a crowded room.  I'm the kind of girl...ok woman...who visited Paris for 4 days and never once set foot in the Louvre, but I did venture out of my way to eat Berthillon sorbet at their "original" ice cream store, and knew just were to go to munch on delicious macaroons... Laduree...c'est magnifique!

Don't get me wrong, I love certain designers and I'm fairly adept at recognizing beautiful antique furniture or a particular wood species.  I can also rattle off quite a few names of silver, china, and crystal without the benefit of reference materials.  But my daughter put it quite succinctly, (after I accompanied her to the ballet at the Kennedy center a few year ago as part of her birthday gift), when she declared that "the arts are lost on you"!!!

Now, I could have been horribly offended by her comment, but when someone tells you something that you know has a grain of truth to it, you can't really be offended can you?  I mean she was right in saying that "some" of the arts are lost on me.  After all, I'm the person watching the ballet who loses the beauty of the art form while fixating on the length of a particular dancer's legs and neck, or which pirouette wasn't "quite" up to snuff.  Or even how many bulbs are burned out in the beautiful chandelier hanging from the ceiling.  So see...I do have some taste, I noticed the chandy right?!

What I lack in artistic knowledge I make up for with boatloads personal preferences.  I know what I like and I rarely waffle on a decision to buy something.  I can see something and then years later come across that same item or even one similar, and I will be drawn to it again and again.  Mr. Tide likes to say that my tastes are very consistent.  He also likes to add that if there are two identical things sitting side by side I WILL pick the most expensive one.  I like to think of this as both a blessing and a curse!

Over the years I've mentally cataloged certain artists who's work I covet and hope to own one day.  To the true art lover, their prices may seem inexpensive, a bargain in the world of fine art, but for me with college tuition bills from one child and more looming on the horizon for our son who starts college next Fall, they might as well be Picasso's or Monet's.  Still, I hope to one day own one of these beautiful works knowing that it will be an investment , if not monetarily then certainly mentally, as I would get great enjoyment out of passing by it each and every day, and something like that can't be measured in money, it's simply invaluable.

I hope you enjoy seeing two of my favorite artists and their works.  And if you happen to be lucky enough to own artwork by one of them...just don't tell me!...NO, I'm joking... I would love to hear about it and live vicariously through your art!

Artist Scott Kelley has beautiful paintings of wildlife.  His blue herons are beyond beautiful!

Isn't this blue heron painting beautiful?  And look at the punch of color that vibrant green backdrop provides...stunning!

Here is another one of his lovely heron paintings.  The level of detail is incredible and so lifelike.

He has such an eye for detail and his use of vibrant rich colors, makes his artwork "jump" off the page.

Paintings of birds are not the only thing that Scott creates.  The painting above, from his archives, appears to be a study in "found" objects from the along the beach.

This next artist is near and dear to my heart.  John Matthew Moore is a Georgia native who now calls northern Virginia home.  His creates astonishingly beautiful botanicals that are so realistic you want to lean in to smell their sweet fragrance!  But as beautiful as his botanical, egg, and shell paintings are, it's his sheep paintings that make me want to mortgage the farm to own one!  As "mom" to two herding dogs, and a sheep farm less than a mile from my home, I can't think of anything more appropriate to hang on my walls.

This exquisite orchid is just one example of his masterful artistry.

Photo:  Martin Trowbridge

Tulips are one of his trademark series and he clearly has a passion for these delicate and beautiful flowers.

He makes something even as simple as this bird's egg into a thing of beauty!

You may have seen some of his artwork featured in one of the rooms in the DC Design Show House.

I had  some serious art envy when I saw that fellow blogger, Jeannine over at Small and Chic in Cville had one of his prints hanging in her own home!  Aptly named Olivia, John Matthew Moore's gorgeous ewe print looks smashing on her walls I must say!

Don't you just want to reach out and pet that adorable woolly head?

I hope my little trip through a few of my favorite artists has inspired you to find your own special artwork.

For more on how Jeannine became the proud owner of Olivia, visit her blog by clicking HERE and then on the posts about Olivia.  She's also hosting a Giveaway right now where you can win the cool antler bottle opener pictured below, so mosey on over and tell her I sent you!  Don't forget to say hi to Olivia while you're there!

Be Still My Heart

I've mentioned before that I have a dish "issue."  I'm completely and utterly addicted to dishes, or more specifically to serveware.  Platters, cake plates, you name it, if they are pretty I want them!  I have plenty of plates too, some with services for 20 and others just a few dessert plates in a particular pattern, but it's those darn serving pieces that draw me in like a moth to a flame!

As much as I love these pretty little wares, the lack of crisp bills overflowing from my wallet (ok I don't have a wallet I just shove stuff into a zippered pocket in my purse), keeps me from picking up too many of the things I really, truly want!  There are a few companies out there that make my heart skip a beat when I see their beautiful offerings.  Burleigh or Burgess Dorling & Leigh, if you want to sound highfalutin, is one of those companies.

It seems that everything I see on their website makes me want to pack a bag and jump on the next British Airways flight to London!  Sadly, that's not going to happen anytime soon, so for a long time now I've had to settle for gawking on the internet and imagining what a set of their bowls, dishes, or a platter might look like in "my" kitchen!

The other day, while on one of my fantasy "internet" shopping sprees I found IT!!!  There it was, right before my eyes...my heart raced, my pulse quickened, and I ran for my purse (and that zippered pocket) to buy it!  Today, when the UPS truck arrived I knew just what it was!  It wasn't my son's car detailing supplies, or something from my husband's work...it was for me and it was something I've always wanted but had never considered due to the price!

It was my perfectly packed, bubble wrapped Burleigh Burgess Chintz Platter from Williams Sonoma Home!  But wait, there's more!  This wasn't just any old Burleigh platter, this was my drop dead gorgeous dirt cheap Burleigh platter!

Now that term "dirt cheap" is relative I know.  Had I been in Target and seen a large platter costing $25.00 I would have walked right past, but this was Burleigh...my Idol in the world of dishware!!  Originally listed on their website for $195.00, which was a "tad" overpriced by my estimation, it had been marked down to $29.95 and then I had received an email offering me an extra 20% off!  Can you sense me grinning like a Cheshire cat people...while ripping the packing to shreds?!

Ok, so here "she" is (why do I refer to all things dish'y' as "she"?)...in all her Burleigh glory!

And here's a view of her...umm pardon my French...derriere!

And her beautiful Burleigh Birthmark!

I knew right where to put her...on the hood above our range.

And then I stood back and admired her beauty, and the gorgeous chintz pattern, and the deep blue color.

And then...I rushed right back over to my computer and ordered some of the matching plates!!!

I'm linking up for Blue Monday over at Smiling Sally's wonderful blog!

Classic Meets Contemporary...A Beautiful Kitchen Marriage

When I started this blog, just a few short weeks ago, I had a mission.  I wanted to bring you all stories and photos of wonderful homes.  In my travels as a freelance magazine writer over the last 11 years I've been blessed to meet wonderful people and see some amazing homes.  Unfortunately, sometimes you can't feature every home you come across for a variety of reasons so I decided that if I started a blog I could feature whomever I wanted, wherever I wanted, and whenever I wanted.  They could be grand 10,000 square foot homes, or tiny 800 square foot abodes...the sky's the limit!

I know the rules to successful blogging say, "pick a genre and stick with it" but how boring is that?!  At least for me anyway.  I love contemporary design, country style, European charm, you name it, so why pigeonhole myself (or you all) that way?  There will be an underlying theme though...I promise each home will be beautiful!  My hope is that even if there is a post that isn't quite "your" style, that you'll be able to find elements that are beautiful in each and every home I feature, and that you'll find something that you could incorporate into your own homes!

So with all of that in mind, I knew right away a few homes that would be at the top of my list to be included in my blog.  The list is long and varied and will take quite awhile to work my way through, but it's there, tucked inside my brain, waiting to be unleashed week after week.  One of those homes at the top of the list was that of my friend Traci.

As some of you who have spent a bit of time on the internet already know, friendships can blossom anywhere, even in cyberspace!  I've been a member of a home and garden forum for a little over a year while in the midst of planning our own kitchen and whole house remodel.

GardenWeb (aka GW), became a valuable resource, providing me with answers to everything from stupid questions about which way I should angle my tile, to calming my fears when I wondered if the white I had chosen to paint my white cabinetry would be "too" white!  It's full of amazingly talented, generous, and knowledgeable people who are as obsessed with the minutia of design as I am!  Somewhere along the way you transition from being a "greenhorn"  to giving others advice from your own experiences and it becomes a wonderful place to just hang out and exchange ideas and information among people who are equally passionate about kitchens, gardening, decorating, just about anything!

I don't remember exactly how Traci and I met, but I think it was after I posted a reply to her post about her amazing new coffered ceiling!  It didn't take long before we were chatting it up on GW and eventually emailing one another to exchange not only "kitchen" information but also "life" info!  She would keep me up to date on her "never-ending" remodel and I could share with her everything that was happening with our own whole house reno.  It was a friendship borne of creativity AND commiseration.

We often joke about getting together for a mojito or sharing a yummy dessert, but distance has prevented us from doing so.  She's in Georgia and I'm in Maryland so it's not like we can just jump in the car and meet up somewhere for coffee.  We have however, through the magic of email, and forums,  been able to see one another's homes and offer support to one another.

So without further adieu, here is their smashing new kitchen.   I know you'll agree with me when I say that Traci and her husband's new kitchen is worthy of some very big OOHing and AHHHing!   After you enjoy looking at...and then re-looking at her beautiful kitchen, please leave her some "blog" love about her new kitchen!

Located in a historic neighborhood in Atlanta, the original kitchen, which was approximately 70 years old, had remained remarkably intact over the years except for the incorporation of  some modern appliances and the addition of white Corian counters by a previous owner.

Appearing somewhat charming in this "BEFORE" picture, Traci assures me that it was NOT that charming in real life!

Because the kitchen was being relocated to the new addition, Traci and her husband were able to continue to use their old GE stove and double ovens (which still worked),  during much of the remodel.  Don't you just love the microwave arrangement hanging from the chains?  Who thought that was a good idea?!

The former kitchen is now a stylish sitting area with a "hip" bold black and white settee, drum shade ceiling fixture, and beautiful artwork.

A "BEFORE" picture of the dining room features lemon yellow walls and light stained white oak floors.

Now, the dining room is a study in sophistication with it's soft gray color scheme, crisp white trim, dark wood furnishings, and eye catching chandelier.

The new kitchen is a mix of contemporary and classic design.

They chose classic custom shaker cabinetry, a stunning coffered ceiling, marble, and dark hardwood flooring which all speak appropriately to the age of the house.  But they infused it with their own sense of style by adding contemporary hardware, glass fronted horizontal  cabinets, and unique light fixtures.

The island is cherry wood, stained a deep rich ebony color.  It pairs perfectly with the Persian Pearl Granite top, and custom glass shelf made by a local company, Advanced Glass Designs.  The island provides extra storage and on one end is a wine rack while the other end provides shelving for storing cookbooks or decorative items.

Above is a close up of the gorgeous island granite, prep sink and crackled glass shelf.  The sink is a Ticor and the faucet is by Delta in polished Chrome.

Greta, the resident watch dog, keeps an eye on the wine collection.  Word on the street is, she's also a VERY knowledgeable Sommelier!

Being Manhandled never looked so good!  This very cool hardware was purchased from My Knobs, along with the stainless steel bar pulls and knobs by Hickory Hardware.

One Manhandle was used on each of the pullout spice cabinets located on either side of the 48 inch American Range.  The range features 6 burners, a grill, and double ovens which are all gas.

The floors in the new kitchen were stained a deep dark color to help ground the space.  The perimeter cabinets are topped with Cambrian Black Granite.  This contrast of black, white, and gray is a theme throughout the kitchen and provides continuity AND drama!  The striking stainless Vent Hood is 54 inches wide and from the Contemporary Series by Vent-A-Hood.  The 3 x 6 Calacatta Marble backspash tiles are from Builders Depot Direct.  Traci notes that they were very reasonably priced and the company's customer service was top notch!

These sumptuous pendant lights are by local lighting designer Christopher Moulder.  From his line entitled "Droplet," they look like pieces of jewelry.  They are the perfect compliment to the kitchen and remind me of a diamond necklace when beautifully paired with a "little" black dress!

Beautiful Mercury Glass Pendants from Shades of Light, hang above the kitchen sink.

Hidden behind the frosted, glass fronted doors is the perfect spot for storing stemware.  Hinges allow the doors to open vertically, something often found in European style kitchens.

Another Euro-style feature incorporated into the design by Traci and her husband, are the Plinth lights found on the bottom of the island.  These small LED lights on the island's toe kick are one of those "cool" items that set their kitchen apart.  Traci saw them featured in a British design magazine and just knew she had to have them!  The bar stools came from Overstock.com and provide another contemporary element in the space.

A view to the dining room shows the "open" concept design of the new kitchen, making it the perfect place for entertaining.

Frosted glass panels on the door to the new walk in pantry takes something ordinary and turns it into something extraordinary!

Traci and her husband highly recommend keeping plenty of this on hand if you're undergoing any sort of remodel!

Quiet Sunday

Sundays are for relaxing, taking life easy, or taking a quiet walk through nature, like the one pictured above.  The photo above is just one of the many gorgeous photos by talented photographer and blogger, Kate over at Chronicles of a Country Girl.  She has  an amazing "eye" for photography and you can "while" away (not to be confused with "wile" which means to trick) the hours by clicking on her Flickr Photostream  HERE and watching her lovely photos scroll across the screen!  Don't forget to check out her other blog A Picture A Day for even more of her amazing photos!

It's gray and chilly here today, so I plan to snuggle up with a cup of tea and catch up on some reading.

Speaking of reading...check back this week to see a post about my "chance" encounter with a local author on Saturday! Here's a hint...

AND you won't want to miss the kitchen renovation done by my friend Traci that I'll be featuring on Monday!  Did I mention that it's fabulous?!!  Here is a little taste of what to expect...This is a "BEFORE" shot...you won't believe your eyes when you see the finished kitchen!

A Low Tide High Style GIVEAWAY!

To all of you who have visited my blog, commented, or become followers I want to say Thank You!  I really do appreciate your comments and just the fact that you take time out of your busy schedules to spend a little time with me and my thoughts each day!

As a little token of my appreciation I wanted to host a Giveaway of some of the pretty, beachy things I've found as I have visited local shops here in southern Maryland aka "The Land of Pleasant Living!"  Because I never like buying just "one" of anything, I will be picking 2 winners for my first Giveaway!

All of the items in the Giveaway were purchased by Low Tide High Style.

Here is the lovely Sea Anemone Plate I gave you a "sneak peek" at earlier!  It came from Traditions of Loveville, and I found it when my son and I were out on our little shopping jaunt the other day.  I love the shape of this little decorative plate and I love that I can always find something to bring home from Traditions, it's been a favorite of mine for YEARS!  If you've never visited Traditions in Loveville, Maryland, it's worth the drive!

Here's a close up of the plate.  I love the crackle finish on the anemone!

Lola Belle Co. is where you'll find these next items offered in the Giveaway.  Their website may be a work in progress, but their store is lovely and offers something for nearly everyone.  If you happen to be in Leonardtown, Maryland, make sure you pop in and see what they have and tell them Kat sent you!

These Seaspray sachets smell heavenly...or like the sea, which to me are synonymous!
Each winner will receive one, and you'll love how it will freshen up a room and remind you of
a walk along the beach at sunset!

I also found these yummy seafood spice packages.  The packaging is truly beautiful, they would make a thoughtful "just because" gift don't you think?

Yum!!!

Seafood anyone?

Next it was off to Pink Beach, located in the Wildewood Shopping Center in California, Maryland.  Pink Beach is a beach lover's dream filled with fun, funky colors and great gifts.  You can't go in to their store and not come out with a smile on your face and a pretty bag filled with beachy goodies in your hand!

My find for today was this truly "cool" coral votive holder!  It holds two votives and wouldn't it look wonderful sitting next to your beautiful new sea anemone plate?

I just love the fact that it holds not ONE but TWO little votive candles!

OK, hold on to your hats, we're not done yet!

Our final Beachy item is a beautiful shell found at Cecil's Country Store.  You've heard me rave about this store before, and for good reason!  Located in Great Mills, Maryland, and housed in an old country store (complete with squeaky floorboards), it's filled with delightful finds!  Candles, artwork, and gift items are just some of the wonderful things you'll find here. There's even a whole room dedicated to nautical decor, so you're sure to find something you'll love!

I just couldn't pass up this beautiful aqua seashell!

Isn't it elegant, and it's even pretty on the inside!  P.S. I "own" one!

So there you have it folks, our little Sea Anemone Plate is lonely no more!!
